If you've read my confession story, you'll probably ask "ano kaya itsura nya nung Johnson's baby powder lang gamit nya?" I was just plain and simple to which ganun pa din naman ako to this day if there is no occassion. But looking at this photo with slight makeup on...ay masaya nman din tingnan.lol! It can really enhance one's beauty. Now this was taken 3 yrs ago. Naalala ko tuloy sabi ng instructor/mentor ko from Maquillage Professionals. Sa lahat ng studyante dito, si Ms. DIAHN ang most improved..hahahaha! 😂 Kasi nga di ako nag me-makeup. But going through the class..kailangan mo i apply sa models mo or sa sarili mo. So drastic yung change sa look ko as in.

Makeup artistry, the art form and business side of it had opened many opportunities for me and its quite a rewarding surprise. Bukod sa free travels (yezzzz domestic and international), sponsored makeup products (yezzz again..i get it sometimes), i get to work alongside industry made names for some collaborations, rub elbows with a few celebrities, bring home income and stream in more added incomes.

Real Talk!
We all go through this "nothing works" your way day. And if you are putting makeup on your face, chances are 1 hour na di ka pa tapos sa mukha mo or mukha ng client mo and you keep repeating and adding more products to the face. STOP!🚫

Before you further mess up your work and dampen your mood..here's my inside tip to you;

There are 3 focal features of the face that generally fetches involuntary attention to from other people right away. Do you know these 3?

Here goes.;
● Eyebrows
● Eyes
● Lips

They are what we call POWER FEATURES. Find out which one of these 3 is most attractive on your face and work on it. There's no need to go full makeup mode on when you are feeling under the weather. JUST work on one or two if not all to get you by and give you that small mood lift.

Some secrets are worth the share for world peace😊.

Secret 1- CLEAN FACE (sana)
Muas appreciate clients who come with bare faces..meaning malinis, no products applied prior makeup. Wag masamain... worry lang namin di kakapit ng maayos ang makeup products. Sayang lang din kasi kung sakaling meron coz tatanggalin din.

Secret 2 - GROOMING (sana)
Some opt not to let their eyebrows, lip hair touched for trimmings and clean up but expect on fleek and polished finish. Ok pag fine and sparse brow hairs..but for thick and bushy..asahan betty lafea and male version peg ang kalalabasan.. concealer is not enough.

Secret 3- THE LOOK (sana)
Big issue pag di na deliver..what's worst paburahin at paulit ma achieve lang gusto. Much that we are artists to help create or re-create the look, there maybe some limitations lang talaga. Baka sa skin types, facial features, available makeup products, skills expertise and/or time constraints. Madalas ang mga ganitong eksena. The mind deceives the eye kuno. Kailangan mag "mirror mirror on the wall..." moment minsan.

Secret 4 - SORRY (sana)
Eto ha, though challenging sa artist ang may mga skin imperfections, there's no need to say "sorry" because your skin/feature is not "perfect". Nakakaloka ang default "perfect skin" standard ng society. It is much welcome saamin artist to work on your face and make something beautiful out of it (perfect or imperfect form, it is a given canvas that we have to work onto). Any flat surfaced imperfection is hideable with makeup. However, it's a different story for bumps..it cannot be concealed totally. O ayan ha claro tayo d2..lol!

Secret 5 - STILLNESS (sana)
Para mabilis matapos, "let us offer some prayer in silence" with an attitude mode on muna sana...di po naka tungo ha. It is hard enough to do makeup sideways to clear the mirror view for you, we appreciate much those that are well behaved (parang kinder/prep) specially when we are doing the sensitive and fine line areas like tightlines, lash mascara and liners..Diosko po, few to last step to finish tapos nasundot, lumampas or nag smear...asahan ang stillness ni MUA..lol!

The best way for a MUA to retain a good relationship with partner photographers is to deliver and ensure a good and clean output. Konting mess up is fine, but wag naman grabe. Wag mag contribute sa hirap ng trabaho nila. Editing is also part of their job. If your subject delivery is not good, you give them more job just to clean up your mess which equates to avoidance of future team ups. Talo ka. No partnership=No income. What's worst, baka na tsismis ka pa sa ibang photographers. So take pride in creating and delivering your work.😊

CONFESSION OF A MAKEUP ARTIST:
“Hindi talaga ako mahilig sa Makeup!”

Bata pa lang ako, I would see my mom every morning at 5 am fixing her face in front of the mirror. She’s the kind of lady who would not go out of the house na hindi made up yung face nya. This morning ritual though of hers never triggered any interest in me. I was outdoorsy and ang type ko noon mag laro ng mag laro lang sa labas, lol! I remember too, she would always make kulit and remind me before going to school to put powder on my face to which I often ignored, pwera na lang pag na harang nya ako talaga sa main door at nahatak sa buhok, yes… di nya ako palalabasin ng house if I don’t put powder. “Nag dadalaga kana and your face is getting oily, put some now!” … ang product ng diskurso namin araw araw .. si Johnsons baby powder lang naman.

High School came, I would see my girl classmates trying and putting on eye liners and lip glosses. Sikat si Madonna and Cyndy Lauper nung time na yun so yah, liners, lip glosses and spraynets were in. Guess what? … wala pa rin ako ka interest-interest sa mga pinag lalagay ng mga classmates/friends ko sa mukha, buhok o labi nila. By this time then, I was bookish na, either sa library oh sa mga sulok, sulok ng school campus ako tumatambay with my favorite Mills and Boons or Sydney Sheldons. The only ritual I do is, si Johnsons baby powder pa din and for the lips, well I have that habit of biting my lips and passing my tongue over my lips, so biting was my lip stain and laway was my shinner, lol! It’s funny but true. This went on until college days and my early working years but with exceptions to corporate events and of course my own wedding, which kailangan kulayan talaga by default.

THE JOURNEY:

Fast forward, 4 yrs ago, I lost my job in corporate after working for 18 years. The company was sold and I was one of those tinamaan ng restructuring,. I tried getting back by applying locally again, but because of age, experience and rate …lagi rejected! When I asked, “Over Qualified ka!” or “ taas na ng rate mo, di afford” ang laging sagot. This went on for about a year, hanggang nag sawa na ako and I felt so hurt na din. There was no room for a 45 year old, with a specialized skill for a small market to get back in the local scenery. Muni-muni, the next option was to go outside of the country, so I asked my family, “Are you guys ok wala and malayo si mama sa house?” I got solid NOs from all 3 family members. I was also hesitant coz both my kids were in their critical teenage years. My son was 15 and my daughter 13, and my husband was also busy building his career, wala sya time sa mga bata. Shocks, naiyak ako…so where will I put myself? There were so many tugs, between my pursuit for my career vs. the well being of my family vs. the finances. I had to do something.

I am a cerebral type of person so going back to corporate and its grind was the next best option pero wala tlga! So ano next? I looked at my extended family, from my husbands side and realized, most if not all were into the events industry, crafty businesses and all are successful. Na excite ako bigla, yehey, my possible solution na ako pero wait lang, di kaya ng cerebral powers ko mag shift to the artsy world, but the needs were getting bigger and I have back utangs to pay since the time na hospitalized and eventually nag pass away my mom from CA, it was a huge amount, and what I got as severance pay most of it went there, as well as to the balance of the house and lot I got for my mom. But, there is also the present family to feed and care for, there has to be a way to bring in fresh income to help the husband. Though kinakaya naman nya, but i felt he was hit hard and thrown off balance by my sudden jobless state. I had to swallow my pride, ego and go for the shift…so ano pwede ko pasukin na hindi ko nman sasagasaan business lines nila? 1 sis in law was into events planning and coordination, the other into events styling and catering, the brother in law a photographer and another brother in law is into lights and sounds. Yayks! Ano natira??? MAKEUP’an! I got sad all of a sudden, yung ayaw ko, yun ang natira. But looking at the bright side, I said objectively, matutulungan nila ako mag umpisa sa industriya. Was I right? or wrong in making the shift?

THE CHALLENGES

Challenge 1 - The STIGMA, I came from a family of professionals (medical and corporate fields) and my alternative livelihood is “Beauty parlor” career? Yan ang tawag noon.. wala pang MUA na label noon eh. The conservative family set where I came from may have a hard time understanding my career option.

Challenge 2-The COST to learn a new skill. Ang mahal pala mag aral! Muntik ko na di pursue, but my husband supported me and sya nag bayad at bumili ng mga gamit ko.lol!

Challenge 3 - Di porke the family works in the same industry, insert ka na agad agad sa negosyo nila. May team na din sila, buo na. Singit ka lang pag pwede. I was lucky, my sisters were kind enough to let me in.

Challenge 4 - Ano market ko? Wedding, Theatre, Film? Wala ako connections or di ko kabisado kalakaran ng industriya...and ang inaral ko Basic MUA for Fashion and Photography in High Def... runway! Shockers!

Challenge 5 - Ay bakit hilaan pababa sa pricing? The more MUAS in the same industry, the more the pricing gets distorted, naloka ako. Talo sa pamasahe.

Challenge 6 - Your skillset is put to test and challenged constantly. Na experience ko with 2 clients, pinaulit makeup application 2x ha! Tinuro ba yan sa school..hindi!, Madami emotional and embarrassing set backs.. but getting same kwentos from co-MUAs abetted that feeling of shame and lacking. It made me work harder and appreciate the lessons I have learned along the way, kasama na skillset upgrade. One can never stop learning, test and use new products and to go beyond my comfort zone. My character and professionalism was strengthened.

All these and more happened and pinag daanan ko.. it was not an easy, breeze walk thingy in the park. But luckily, the school gave me my 1st gig, my first taste of how to chase time and buhat all my working stuff without a team, my sisters gave me next the chance to work in the wedding industry, another event gig with a celebrity, dear friends and relatives followed suit for teachings and workshops and more little doors opened for international destination gigs. It brought me to Australia, Cambodia, Vietnam, South Korea, Bali among others and served 2 of my best interests at the moment, travel and real earnings thru Makeup Artistry. What works I have made and collected lead to another paying clients, collaborations with made names in the industry and/or new business opportunities. At this point, I pay tribute to mother dear’s validosa moments. She knew, that somehow and at some point, her naggings will be put to good use. Saya lang siguro if she was still alive to witness it all.

Now, may interest pa ba ako sa makeup or pag makeup? Naman! The answer is YES. I've moved on beyond Johnsons baby powder, hahaha..dami na free plugging ni Johnsons and being a stay at home jobless mom. It made me appreciate makeup's many uses, applications and the business opportunities it brought to me. I was surprised by its returns. If i can only lay it all down to you here, baka pati kayo magulat. But I don't want to brag and or incite the "shiny syndome" moment. But it is truly rewarding.

Kaya when I see posts about struggling newbie artists, or stay at home moms na forever looking for business opportunities or simply a girl/lady/mama/lola na nakalimutan na mag ayos ng sarili sa dami ng gawaing bahay. I feel them, I was once where they are at the moment. I feel sad. I want to help and reach out to them.

Now, I am not an expert in all aspects of Makeup Artistry, kasi diversed ang path nya. Maraming facet, may for personal use, wedding, theatrical, film, tv, fashion, pageantry, prosthetics, body art, free creatives etc. but if it’s about how to start to be a MUA like me or getting into a MUA biz or if you are already a MUA, how to further grow your business, and/or how to use beauty products for home, then I can help. It will be my way of giving back to the industry that gave me another chance to experience a new working lifestyle that is fun and fulfilling.
