Back when cellphones were not yet common, owning one already felt special. One day, a friend of mine decided to sell an old phone he no longer used. I thought it would be a good idea to buy it and give it to someone I knew truly needed it for work and daily communication.
I gave the phone with good intentions, believing it could still help even in a simple way. But later, I found out from another friend that the reason the phone was being sold was because it was already starting to break down. Then I heard that some people were asking, “Why would someone give a broken phone?”
Hearing that hurt me deeply. I never meant to offend anyone. In fact, I had not even given something like that to my own family before. I only wanted to help someone who needed it more than I did.
Thankfully, someone spoke up and said, “Even if it’s old or imperfect, you should still be thankful because it was given with kindness.”
Still, the experience stayed with me. Since then, I became hesitant to give things away again, afraid that my effort and sincerity would only be criticized instead of appreciated.
