ATOPIC DERMATITIS

Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema) is a fairly common genetic, non-contagious skin disorder.
In 90% of the cases it appears in children under the age of 5 years which may persist into adulthood in rest of the 10%. There is usually a family history of asthma, hay fever, allergic rhinitis etc.
In children it presents as dry, scaly/oozy patches on the scalp, forhead, face(esp. cheeks)and the body. It is very itchy, the child is restless and unable to sleep well.
In adults it appears in the creases of the elbows or knees. Atopic people have a very dry, itchy and scaly skin, other eczemas e.g. seborrheoic dermatitis(dandruff), urticaria and hand eczemas are also commonly seen.

Understanding acne

ACNE (Pimples)

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with sebum(oil) and dead skin cells, causing over growth of bacteria and inflammation. Genetic predisposition plays a major role in the aetiology however hormonal imbalance and certain physical factors may also be responsible.
Common amongst teenagers (70-87% prevelance) however adult acne can also occur. Severity may range from mild to severe. It may involve face, neck, chest, back and shoulders. It can be a source of great psychological distress. If not treated on time, may leave ugly scars which can be permanent.

What is pityriasis versicolor?

Pityriasis versicolor is a common yeast infection of the skin, in which flaky discoloured patches appear on the chest and back.

The multiple colours of pityriasis versicolor give rise to the second part of the name, versicolor. Pityriasis versicolor is sometimes called tinea versicolor.

Who gets pityriasis versicolor?

Pityriasis versicolor most frequently affects young adults and is slightly more common in men than in women.
It can also affect children, adolescents and older adults.
Pityriasis versicolor is more common in hot, humid climates than in cool, dry climates.
It often affects people that perspire heavily. It may clear in the winter months and recur each summer.

Although it is not considered infectious in the conventional sense, pityriasis versicolor sometimes affects more than one member of a family.

CLINICAL FEATURES

Pityriasis versicolor affects the trunk, neck, and/or arms, and is uncommon on other parts of the body.
The patches may be coppery brown, paler than surrounding skin, or pink. Pale patches may be more common in darker skin.

Pityriasis versicolor is usually asymptomatic, but in some people it is mildly itchy.

What is the cause of pityriasis versicolor?

Pityriasis versicolor is caused by fungi of the genus Malassezia.
They are dependent on lipid for survival.

Usually malassezia grow sparsely in the seborrhoeic areas (scalp, face and chest) without causing a rash.
It is not known why they grow more actively on the skin surface of patients prone to pityriasis versicolor.

MOLLUSCUM CONTAGIOSUM

Molluscum contagiosum (mo-LUS-kum kun-tay-jee-OH-sum) is a relatively common viral infection of the skin that results in round, firm, painless bumps ranging in size from a pinhead to a pencil eraser. If the bumps are scratched or injured, the infection can spread to surrounding skin.

Though most common in children, molluscum contagiosum can affect adults as well — particularly those with weakened immune systems. In adults with an otherwise normal immune system, molluscum contagiosum involving the ge****ls is considered a sexually transmitted infection.

Molluscum contagiosum spreads through direct person-to-person contact and through contact with contaminated objects. The bumps associated with molluscum contagiosum usually disappear within a year without treatment but doctor-assisted removal is also an option.
