Cervical cancer is a significant health issue in Pakistan, ranking as the third most common cancer among women and the second most frequent between 15 and 44 years of age. In recent years, it has caused over 5,000 new diagnoses and approximately 3,000 deaths annually. The high burden of the disease is linked to late diagnosis, limited screening programs, and the lack of HPV vaccination in the national program, leaving a large population vulnerable.

The HPV vaccine protects against human papillomavirus (HPV) infections that can lead to certain cancers, particularly cervical cancer. Pakistan is running a school-based HPV vaccination program for girls aged 9-14 from September 15-27, 2025, in schools, vaccination centers, and hospitals across Punjab, Sindh, AJK, and Islamabad.
The United States was one of the first countries to use the HPV vaccine, with its introduction occurring in 2006. Australia, the UK, and Canada were also among the initial countries to implement the vaccine program, beginning in the mid-to-late 2000s.
The vaccine is safe, free, and highly effective in preventing the virus and its related health problems.
