“Beauty will save the world” - Dostoevsky
Out of context, it's easy to dismiss this quotation as hopelessly naive or optimistic. But it’s complicated. For Dostoevsky, (at least as we see it) "beauty” transcends aesthetics, and is what inspires the best in us, our aspirations for what is good and true, and what connects us to each other.
Alexander Solzhenitsyn also wrestled with this line in his 1970 Nobel Prize acceptance speech, and we're lucky to be privy to his chain of thought here:
