Miriam Makeba was born March 4, 1932 and died on November 10, 2008. She was an African singer who became known as Mama Afrika, one of the world’s most prominent black African performers in the 20th century. African music was brought to Western audience by her, Miriam popularized the world music and Afropop genres and advocate against apartheid and white-minority government in South Africa.

Makeba was also a songwriter, actress, civil-rights activist and UN goodwill ambassador.
