The date commemorates July 14, 1960, when renowned primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall began her groundbreaking research on wild chimpanzees in Gombe, Tanzania.
World Chimpanzee Day was officially established in 2018 by the Jane Goodall Institute to inspire conservation and promote the welfare of chimpanzees.
Today is a reminder that chimpanzees are Endangered, threatened by habitat loss, poaching, illegal wildlife trade, and infectious diseases.

🐢✨What makes a turtle truly happy? ✨🐢
🔹A large area for swimming
🔹Safe aquatic plants like water lettuce (Pistia) to explore and nibble on
🔹Natural sunlight for basking
A well-designed habitat encourages natural behavior, provides enrichment, and helps turtles stay healthy.

🦠 Why is it important to distinguish between Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria?
Identifying whether bacteria are Gram-positive or Gram-negative is essential for selecting appropriate diagnostics, initiating effective treatment, promoting antimicrobial stewardship, and improving patient outcomes.
🔹Guides empirical antibiotic therapy, as Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria differ in their susceptibility to antimicrobial drugs.
🔹Improves interpretation of cytology and Gram stain results from samples such as ear swabs, wound exudates, urine, and respiratory secretions.
🔹Helps assess disease severity, since Gram-negative bacteria produce lipopolysaccharide (LPS), an endotoxin that can trigger systemic inflammation and septic shock.
🔹Supports infection control by identifying likely pathogens and routes of transmission.
🔹Enhances diagnostic accuracy when combined with culture, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and molecular diagnostics.

🐢 Treatment of the most common diseases in tortoises:
🔹Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD)
Correct diet, UVB lighting, calcium supplementation.
🔹Vitamin A Deficiency (Hypovitaminosis A)
Dietary correction, vitamin A supplementation (avoid overdose).
🔹Dystocia (Egg Binding)
Calcium therapy, oxytocin (selected cases), surgery if necessary.
🔹Upper Respiratory Tract Infection
Correct husbandry, fluid therapy, nebulization, antibiotics based on culture (e.g., ceftazidime, enrofloxacin).
🔹Cloacal Prolapse
Tissue lubrication, reduction under anesthesia, purse-string suture if needed, treat the underlying cause.
❗️Important husbandry note: Many diseases in Russian tortoises are secondary to improper husbandry, including:
- Inadequate UVB lighting
- Incorrect temperatures
- Low humidity
- Poor nutrition
- Chronic dehydration
✅ Correcting environmental conditions is often the most important part of successful treatment and prevention.

✅ Treatment depends on the cause:
• Antibiotics* (often long-term in severe cases)
• Supportive care (fluids, oxygen, nutrition)
• Vitamin C supplementation
• Environmental correction
Stertor and stridor are not just “funny breathing sounds” — they are signs of potentially life-threatening airway disease. Early recognition = better outcomes.
If you work with guinea pigs or treat exotics, this is a sound you should never ignore.
*Remember:
Some common antibiotics (like penicillins given orally) can be fatal in guinea pigs due to dysbiosis.
