Chinese Embassy in Korea issues warning ‼️ ⚠️ after Chinese National dies from botched liposuction in Seoul clinic

Saddened to hear the news of a patient dying during a liposuction procedure. A lot of my patients go to Korea for cosmetic surgery, so here’s what you need to know
1️⃣ You may lose insurance coverage
Most health insurance and life insurance will deny coverage for treatment of complications or deaths after a cosmetic procedure. You (or your family) will need to file a civil suit against the clinic or doctor to get compensation
2️⃣ Cheap is usually not good
Korea has the highest per capita number of Plastic Surgeons, with varying levels of training and experience. The most talented and experienced Korean Plastic Surgeons charge high fees which are even higher than Singapore
3️⃣ Follow up is difficult
In the pursuit of aesthetic perfection, often the cosmetic outcome may not be satisfactory and a revision procedure is required. This would be logistically difficult
4️⃣ Fixing a botched procedure may cost more than the savings
With Plastic Surgery, you really need to get it right the first time. Due to scarring and distorted anatomy, subsequent procedures are more challenging and outcomes less favourable.

My advice to someone interested in Plastic Surgery in Korea?
1️⃣ Consult with a Singaporean Plastic Surgeon to get a cost estimate first, if there isn’t too much of a price difference then it’s probably better to have the surgery done locally
2️⃣ Consider non surgical treatments which are safe and have no downtime (eg non surgical body contouring, non surgical eye bag removal, non surgical face lift)

“Ozempic Face” unintended effects of popular weight loss medication on your face 😱

Ozempic, Wegovy, Saxenda, Semaglutide, Liraglutide- these medications for diabetes and weight management have been creating a lot of news lately, with well known celebrities such as Elon Musk and Oprah Winfrey using these medications for weight loss 🕺💃

This has led to another unintended epidemic- scores of patients around the world are reporting facial hollowing, skin sagging and accelerated facial ageing after using weight loss medication 😰

To clarify, this is not a side effect of the medication but an expected effect of rapid weight loss. The same effects would occur after bariatric surgery or an overzealous diet regime 🥗

With rapid weight loss- the fat stores of the entire body are depleted, including fat found on the face. This leads to the face looking sunken and hollow, and the facial skin to appear loose and saggy 😩

How to avoid this? Don’t lose weight too fast! A rule of thumb is to lose 1-2% of body weight per month- means a 100kg patient should be losing 1-2 kg per month. Gradual weight loss gives the skin time to contract. 😄

In older patients (>40years old), some degree of sagging is inevitable as the skin has lost elasticity. To address this, skin tightening and face lifting treatments such as SecretDUO (RF microneedling + erbium glass laser) or Ultherapy (micro focused ultrasound with visualisation) would be helpful. For severe cases of facial volume loss, fillers or Ellanse treatments would be recommend 👌🏼

Safety of Ellanse
Ellanse received European approval (“CE Mark”) since 2009 and is also approved by Singapore’s HSA, Korea’s K-FDA and China’s health authorities. PCL and CMC have been used in medical devices for over 40 years and are classified by US FDA as “Generally Regarded as Safe”.

Contraindications for Ellanse treatment
Contraindications include major medical and dermatological disease, presence of permanent facial implant, active skin infection and pregnancy.

Potential complications from Ellanse
Infection, nodules, granuloma, migration, vascular occlusion- with proper injection technique these are rare ✌🏼💉

All about Ellanse (part 2): who is Ellanse suitable for?

🙋🏻‍♀️ Ellanse is suitable for individuals seeking facial rejuvenation, restoring facial volume lost due to the natural ageing process and tightening the skin. Most clients start doing Ellanse in their 30s and 40s when early signs of facial ageing develop.

⭐️Ellanse vs Hyaluronic acid based fillers

Ellanse has a longer duration of action (18-24 months) compared to the traditional hyaluronic acid (“HA Filler”) gel based fillers (9-12 months), with the added benefit of collagen stimulation and skin tightening. However, unlike HA Fillers which can be dissolved with the antidote hyaluronidase, Ellanse cannot be reversed. Ellanse is also not used in sensitive areas such as the undereye and lips. For clients getting fillers for the first time or considering treatment of the undereye and lips- HA fillers would be the better choice. For clients who have had HA Fillers before, liked the result and are hoping for a longer lasting treatment- Ellanse would be a good option.



⭐️Ellanse vs collagen biostimulators

The 3 Collagen Biostimulators locally approved are: Ellanse (PCL), Sculptra (PLLA- Poly L Lactic Acid), Radiesse (Calcium hydroxyapatite). These products have a long track record of safety and effectiveness. As a rule of thumb, Ellanse provides more volumisation and Sculptra more skin tightening effect. Radiesse can be hyperdiluted for treatment of the body and hands.

👨🏻‍⚕️ All about Ellanse (part 1): what is Ellanse, how does it work?

💉 Ellanse is an injectable dermal filler and collagen biostimulator that restores facial volume, smooths out facial lines and firms skin. Ellanse contains 30% polycaprolactone (PCL) microspheres suspended in a 70% carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) gel carrier.

💊Polycaprolactone (PCL) is a medical polyester which has been used for medical purposes for over 50 years- found in sutures, orthopaedic implants and wound dressings. In the body, PCL is gradually broken down by hydrolysis into carbon dioxide and water by the body. The PCL microspheres used in Ellanse are designed to offer optimal biocompatibility. They have a smooth surface, a spherical shape and a size of approximately 25–50 μm

🧬Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) is a natural material derived from cellulose that is often used as a gel carrier for injectable collagen biostimulators (Ellanse, Sculptra, Radiesse). It functions to act as a medium for collagen biostimulator particles, and to provide short term volume replacement for 2-3 months.

🔥Working together, the CMC gel delivers immediate results, while the PCL microspheres act as a biostimulator, to ramp up production of your own collagen over the next 2-3 months. This improves skin elasticity and creates a more youthful appearance

🤷🏻‍♂️Localised deposits of adipose tissue (“stubborn fat”) can persist despite a normal weight and active lifestyle. ❄️Cryolipolysis is a non surgical procedure that uses cold temperatures to destroy fat cells. The Cryolipolysis device cools the fat cells to -5C, freezing and destroying fat cells without harming the surrounding tissues.

🔥SculptSure is a non surgical body contouring treatment that uses laser energy to permanently destroy stubborn fat cells.
