Z for Zinc Oxide

Zinc oxide is a versatile, mineral-based ingredient that provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection, calms inflammation, treats acne, and supports wound healing. Ideal for sensitive skin, it acts as a physical barrier to reduce irritation, oiliness, and premature aging while promoting skin repair.

Unlike chemical sunscreen that needs time to absorb, mineral or physical sunscreen that contains zinc oxide works instantly upon application by creating a protective barrier on the skin. It acts as a UV filter with its ability to form a physical barrier on the skin’s surface, reflecting and scattering UV rays to protect your skin from sunburn and photoaging. It is also photostable, meaning it doesn’t break down in sunlight and maintains its effectiveness over time.

Zinc oxide is considered environmentally friendly and reef-safe, as it does not contribute to coral bleaching or harm marine life, unlike some chemical UV filters.

Y for Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

Distilled from the fresh, fragrant blossoms of the tropical Cananga odorata botanical, Ylang Ylang Essential Oil is prized in perfumery and aromatherapy applications. It is reputed to harmonize our internal systems, rejuvenate the skin, comfort the mind, and heighten sensations of pleasure.

The Ylang Ylang botanical (Cananga odorata), nicknamed ‘The Perfume Tree’, can be found abundantly in the exotic islands of Asia, including the Philippines, Indonesia, and Madagascar. Known for its characteristic droopy boughs and elegantly curled yellow flowers, the tree’s bark, leaves, and blossoms has been used for centuries in traditional remedies and celebratory rituals across the region of Southeast Asia.

Exuding a beautifully sweet, warm, and richly floral scent, Ylang Ylang Essential Oil reminds one of a heavenly summer garden that entices the senses with its sensual aromatic notes that seem to be both bold and delicately feminine in its intensity.

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil is available and sold in various grades: Ylang Ylang Extra, Ylang Ylang 1, 2, 3, and Ylang Ylang Complete. The first four grades (Ylang Ylang Ylang Extra and Ylang Ylang 1, 2, 3) reflect the distillation times through which the resultant oil is obtained; Ylang Ylang Complete is the result of continuous, uninterrupted fractionation of the flowers, but is most often derived through the blending of the first four grades.

Extra is the first, short distillation (heady, sweet, floral) ideal for luxury perfumes. Complete is an uninterrupted, full-length distillation (sweeter, deeper, balsamic) often preferred for therapeutic, balanced aromatherapy and skincare uses.

X for Ximenia Americana Seed Oil

WHAT IT DOES

Known as the sour plum fruit, the ximenia tree produces thick, rich oil with over 90% unsaturated fatty acids. It feels unlike any other plant oil in the world! Ximenia seed oil is high in ximenic and nervosic acids, incredible moisturiser for your skin. This light-weight oil also mimics that naturally produced sebum in your skin, supporting its natural function.

WHERE TO FIND IT

Found in Esse Protect Oil. When you use Esse Protect Oil for at least 28 days, you will notice a

W for Wintergreen Essential Oil

Wintergreen essential oil is traditionally extracted from the leaves of the wintergreen plant. There are two species that can produce the oil: Gaultheria procumbens, native to North America, and Gaultheria fragrantissima, native to Asia and India.

The production process involves fermenting the plant’s natural material and distilling it to obtain a purer product. The final product consists almost entirely of methyl salicylate, the active ingredient of wintergreen oil.

The active ingredient in wintergreen oil, methyl salicylate, is closely related to aspirin and has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. As such, wintergreen oil products can act as an anti-inflammatory and topical pain reliever.

V for Vitis Vinifera (Grape Seed Extract)

Grape seed extract is a potent antioxidant which helps maintain skin elasticity by boosting collagen and elastin production. It is an excellent source of vitamins C and E, and together with antioxidants known as flavonoids, all of which improve skin’s texture and reduce the signs of ageing.
