Building safe and healthy boundaries with language

So helpful for kids and adults alike!

Posted • These help kids and their adults SO much!! 🎉🎉

These phrases reduce fighting, hitting, and challenging behaviors, because kids learn what *to say and do* instead of focusing on what not to do.

Hit save to find these 12 phrases that teach kids how to:

🔄 Take turns!! Rather than forcing kids to share, teach them how to ask for a turn next and speak up when they’re still using a toy.

🗣 Self advocacy! Teach kids how to ask for space and tell someone else to please stop. (Also reduces fighting, because this teaches how to communicate needs in a healthy way.)

👨‍👩‍👧 Get help! Teach kids it’s ok to need love, support, and help. Teach how to ask for hugs, love, or TLC when they’re hurting inside (instead of acting out), or ask for help when they feel like they want to hit (instead of hurting someone).

It’s not enough to tell kids what NOT to say and do!! We have to model and teach them what to say instead!

🤷🏻‍♀️ What would YOU add?! I’d love to know!! Share phrases you teach kids to say, and I’ll pin some for others to see too!!

Explore what helps you regulate

Repost from Trauma impacts much more than just our prefrontal cortex or our behavioral activation system. It impacts our whole being—and it must be treated from a whole being perspective. Importantly, any legitimate trauma treatment must consider all of our being—the entirety of our body-mind—not just our thoughts and behaviors, alone.

Remembering the Body

There are many brave researchers and practitioners who have made important contributions to our understanding of how to treat trauma. One of the most useful models for understanding how to understand trauma comes from Peter Levine's conceptualization of the constituents of phenomenological experience that he has memorialized through the catchy acronym, SIBAM, and his work of Somatic Experiencing®.

Be gentle with yourself and tune in to your mind and body and explore what would help you regulate

Repost from

Sometimes we can use cognitive (thinking) strategies to help our bodies feel less reactive.

Sometimes we can use somatic (body-based) strategies to help our thoughts feel less spinny.

AND.

Sometimes that doesn’t work.

When it doesn’t work, it is NOT because you are doing your “thought-work” or “coping skills” wrong and it is NOT because there is something wrong with you.

Our brains and our lives are complex.

Healing approaches that claim “it’s ALL about the body” bypass the reality of the mind.

Healing approaches that claim “it’s ALL about the mind” bypass the reality of the body.

Sometimes body-based reactions need body-based solutions. And sometimes thought-based reactions need thought-based solutions.

We need both. 🙏🏻❤️

Disclaimer: If you are in an unsafe situation, no amount of thought work or body work will “work” because dyregulation is what’s supposed to happen in unsafe situations.

Cultivating the habit of listening to one's self begins in childhood and develops a sense of safety both within the body and mind.

Happiness @ Work is a key issue we need to have meaningful conversations around.

With the uncertainty and heightened stress people are currently facing, having a safe space for conversations around mental and emotional wellbeing and adequate resources and support in this area, will be key for organizations looking to grow in a sustainable manner in a post-covid world.

Which of these phrases of empowerment resonate with your child OR yourself and your inner-child?

Our children need to be empowered.

And so does our inner child.

Let’s all practice healthy boundaries and self-compassion together. 💗

Posted • One of the best ways that we can support our children’s social and emotional development is to equip them with the words they need to express themselves, stand up for themselves, and ask for what they need.
