Ever wondered why some lotions feel rich and creamy while others are light and runny? It often comes down to one simple factor: how much water you add 💧

Distilled Water plays a major role in determining the viscosity (thickness) of your lotion. The more distilled water you include, the thinner and more fluid your final product will be. This can be great if you’re aiming for a lightweight, fast-absorbing lotion. But add too much, and you might end up with something that feels more like a liquid than a cream.

On the flip side, using less distilled water creates a thicker, more luxurious texture. This is perfect for body butters or deeply moisturizing lotions—but go too low, and your product can feel heavy or harder to spread.

It’s all about balance. Small adjustments in your water phase can completely transform the feel, performance, and even the packaging choice for your lotion.

Pro tip: When formulating, tweak your water percentage gradually and test each batch. That’s how you find your perfect texture ✨

✨ How to Make Your Own Body Lotion (Beginner-Friendly) ✨

Ready to create a soft, nourishing lotion from scratch? Here’s a simple step-by-step guide you can follow at home:

🧴 Step 1: Measure Your Ingredients
Carefully measure your oils, butter, and water phase using a digital scale for accuracy.

🔥 Step 2: Heat the Oil Phase
In a heat-safe container, combine your oils and butter and emulsified wax. Warm gently using a double boiler method until fully melted.

💧 Step 3: Heat the Water Phase
In a separate container, heat your water to a similar temperature as your oils.

⚖️ Step 4: Combine & Emulsify
Slowly pour the water phase into the oil phase while blending continuously with an immersion blender. This creates that creamy lotion texture.

🌪️ Step 5: Blend Until Smooth
Keep blending until the mixture thickens and looks smooth and creamy.

🌸 Step 6: Cool Down Phase
Allow the lotion to cool, then add your fragrance or essential oils and preservative (if using).

🫙 Step 7: Bottle & Store
Transfer your lotion into clean, sanitized containers. Store in a cool, dry place.
