Orchids produce several million tiny seeds. Only a few seeds will develop into a green plant.

People use orchids for many purposes, in the perfume industry, spices and in traditional Asian medicine.

Some species of orchids are parasitic. They are unable to produce food (sugar) using sunlight and carbon dioxide (like other plants). Instead, they get their food from fungi that live inside their roots.

An orchid flower is symmetrical, which means it can be divided into two equal parts. The size, shape and texture of the leaves depend on the environment. Plants that are located in dry climates have thick, waxy leaves, while species that live in warm and humid zones have thin, elongated leaves. Some species of orchids have no leaves at all.

The size of orchids depends on the species. They can be tiny, like three kopecks, and very large, weighing several kilograms. Grammatophyllum is the largest orchid in the world. Itspseudobulbscan grows to a length of 2.5 m. Plztystele jungermannioides is considered the smallest orchid, the flower is only 2 mm in diameter.
