Shevchenko got his chance to score in the 2007/08 season against Blackburn Rovers to replace the injured Didier Drogba, but the game ended in an inconclusive. He scored his first goal of the season three days later, equalizing against Rosenborg in what was José Mourinho's last game as Chelsea manager. Throughout the season, the Ukrainian then went out in the starting lineup due to injuries and the appointment of Avram Grant after the departure of Mourinho. However, during the Christmas period, Shevchenko got into good shape. He scored the first goal in Chelsea's 2-0 win over Sunderland and was voted Man of the Match in Chelsea's 4-4 draw against Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge, scoring twice (including a stunning kick from 25 meters to the upper left corner) and assisting Alex, making the score 3:2 in favor of the "pensioners". Shevchenko scored his last goal in the 2007/08 season in a 1-1 draw against Bolton Wanderers. He finished the season with five goals in 17 games.

In the summer of 2005, there were constant reports that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich offered Milan a record sum of 73 million euros and striker Hernan Crespo in exchange for a Ukrainian[44]. The Italian club rejected the offer, but took Crespo on loan. Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon said: "I think Shevchenko is the type of player we want to have in our ranks. After all, to build on what we have achieved, we need a great player, and Shevchenko definitely falls into that category.”[45] The player himself stated that Abramovich's persistence was a key factor in his transition[46]. Milan, desperate to keep the striker, offered Shevchenko a six-year contract extension
