This unusual butterfly owes its name to the fact that the tissues between the veins of the wings look like glass, they are completely transparent.

The wings of this butterfly are translucent, with a wingspan of 5.6 to 6.1 centimeters (2.2 to 2.4 inches).

An amazing butterfly with transparent wings, as if made of the thinnest glass, is known as Greta oto. It is a butterfly from the Nymphalidae family and the Danainae subfamily. Adults of the "glass" butterfly feed on the nectar of many different plant varieties. This butterfly reproduces by laying eggs on plants of the caestrum genus. While feeding on this plant, the caterpillar of the “glass” butterfly accumulates poisonous substances in its tissues and, as a result, the adult butterfly will be able to scare away birds and other predators that encroach on it.
