Lamu, Kenya
The old town of Lamu, on the Indian Ocean island of the same name, was established in the 14th century. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the port city is a mish-mash of cultures – Swahili, Asian, Arabic, European – while along the laid-back coast majestic dhows sail by all day long.

Paracas, Peru
A small seaside town in the Ica region of Peru, Paracas is where the desert meets the sea. A trip to the area isn’t complete without a boat ride to Islas Ballestas, the rocky islands off the Pacific coast known for their diverse wildlife including flocks of sea lions and crowds of baby penguins.

Arizona: Grand Canyon National Park
There's no shortage of beautiful places in Arizona, from the enchanting Emerald Cove to the sacred Canyon de Chelly, but nothing quite compares to the majesty of the Grand Canyon. On the South Rim side of the national park, the Canyon Rim Trail and Trail of Time impress with stunning views of the area's geologic features, as does Hermit Road, accessible via shuttle bus from March through November. Several scenic drives and hiking trails are also available from the North Rim, which is closed in the winter.

A 14-year old drummer boy named Orion P. Howe received the Medal of Honor during the American Civil War for volunteering to supply ammunition under heavy fire. After the war, he joined the Naval Academy because he was still too young for West Point. In his lifetime, he fought 14 battles.
