Interestingly, many studies have demonstrated the decrease in depressive symptoms in patients who receive neuromodulator injections like Botox, Xeomin, Dysport and Jeuveau. Why is that? There are a few hypotheses. Remember the old adage – when you look better you feel better? That’s one, but I also think it is attributable to a decrease in tension headaches and migraines headaches. The most recent study released in 2021 looked at 121 patients, 65 of which suffered from mild to severe depression. The study shows that following a neuromodulator treatment, only 8% did not have a substantial decrease in symptoms of depression. With the use of traditional antidepressants on the rise, particularly in women, many women are seeking non-systemic alternatives. Xeomin differs by not have complexing proteins surrounding the core neurotoxin. In theory, a lack of complexing proteins may reduce antigenicity and hence antibody formation to the product, though clinical significance has yet to be determined. The way I like to describe it is as a “purified” form of Botox. Patients also subjectively have noted that they feel like that can move their face better without wrinkling vs. Botox which can create more rigid paralysis. I believe this may be due to the even diffusion of xeomin.
