✨ Acne & Food Triggers ✨
Acne isn't just acne. It stems from a deeper imbalance in your body, and it's your body's way of saying that something isn't right. And that means you should listen!
For clear skin we start with treating the skin from the outside but if you’re not seeing improvement, the next step is eliminating acne causing foods & drinks such as the following… and also increasing foods that help to lower inflammation, that’s for another post!
✨ Dairy Milk and Dairy Milk Products-
mucous-forming and difficult to digest. The hormone levels in milk play a role in excess sebum production, which promotes acne. Cow's milk elevates insulin levels and some brands even have growth hormones. Elevated insulin increases circulating cortisol levels that bind to our sebaceous glands, increasing sebum production. Dairy also causes PMS issues.
✨Sugar - Foods with high sugar content cause your body's insulin levels to spike. This extreme overdose of insulin increases the production of oils in the skin, which leads to your follicles and pores clogging up with sebum. the Inflammatory effects that are caused by a spike in insulin, this creates the ideal environment for C. Acnes bacteria to thrive, triggering a nasty breakout.
✨Peanuts and Peanut Products - trigger all three of the root causes of acne: inflammation, digestive issues, and insulin-driven hormonal acne.
✨Soy and Soy Products - Similar to dairy, soy affects our body's natural hormone levels. Soybeans are high in phytoestrogens, which can reduce the amount of estrogen in the body. If you have balanced estrogen levels, eating foods high in phytoestrogen can throw your levels off balance, leading to increased cystic acne.
✨Potato Chips and French Fries- These foods are notoriously fried in lots of oils that cause inflammation throughout the body, including the skin. They are also filled with refined carbs, which cause inflammation, leading to wrinkles and premature, aged-looking skin.
✨Processed meats - high in nitrates, causes inflammation.
✨Fatty meats - high in saturated fat, are associated with high concentrations of insulin growth factor. The insulin growth factor stimulates the production of the s*x hormones that can increase acne production.
✨Fast Food - Acne is strongly associated with eating a Western-style diet rich in calories, fat and refined carbohydrates. Fast food items, such as burgers, nuggets, hot dogs, French fries, sodas, and milkshakes are mainstays of a typical Western diet and may increase acne risk.
✨High glycemic foods - Foods with a high glycemic index not only cause acne breakouts but also may be associated with premature aging. High blood sugar levels lead to a process called glycation, where sugar molecules attach to collagen in the skin. This causes collagen to harden, so it breaks rather than bends, leading to wrinkles and a crepey appearance.
✨Artificial Sweetener - have been shown to be able to affect our hormones in the same way as sugar. Artificial Sweeteners have the power to disrupt our gut's microbial inhabitants, and as a consequence negatively affect metabolism and blood sugar balance. This cause leads to skin issues including acne and rosacea.
✨Spicy Foods -spicy foods such as salsa, hot sauce, and chili peppers trigger rosacea, another inflammatory process. The inflammatory cascade causes dilation of blood vessels, increased sebum production, and skin sensitivity. Rosacea runs the spectrum of flushing, breaking out and cysts.
✨Milk Chocolate - Your body metabolizes these carbs the same way as sugar, meaning they can also cause wrinkles by damaging the collagen in your skin. A diet high in fat and refined sugars, like those found in candy and chocolate, can kick sebum production into high gear and trigger inflammatory responses in the body, both of which are known to increase the risk of breakouts.
✨Sodas - sugar as well as carbonic acid and phosphoric acid are also detrimental to your dental health. A single can of soda can contain as much as 10 teaspoons of sugar. All that sugar can lead to hormonal imbalances within the body. Most notably, insulin is impacted by sugar consumption.
Having high levels of insulin in your body can impact other hormones, such as testosterone and estrogen.
✨Energy Drinks - Not only are energy drinks chock-full of inflammatory and glycemic index-loading sugar but they could be loaded with skin-irritating B vitamins. Excessive amounts of vitamin B6 and B12 can show up in vour multivitamins and vitamin-infused energy drinks such as Red Bull.
✨Coffee - contains caffeine which can stimulate stress response in the body.
Consumption of the beverage can trigger the Hypothalamic-pituitarv-adrenal (HPA)
axis causing the brain to release corticotropin-releasing hormones (CH).
This can provoke the pituitary to release adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) and eventually allow the adrenals to release "cortisol", known as the stress hormone.
✨Vegetable Oils - Corn, sunflower, safflower, soy, grapeseed, cottonseed, and vegetable oil. They are rich in omega-6 fats which may push the body into an inflammatory state and exacerbate acne. Vegetable oils are the primary source of omega-6 fatty acids in the Western diet.
✨Trans fat and saturated fat - The fats we consume through our diet can affect the composition of our sebum. Eating more trans and saturated fat can increase the saturated fats in our sebum, making it thicker and more likely to get clogged. Avoiding trans fat and saturated fat is not only good for our hearts but also our skin.
✨Gluten - alters the integrity of the gut, creating cracks in the gut lining that allow toxins to recirculate back into the system. gluten-sensitive people cannot properly digest gluten, these large molecules enter the bloodstream, and the immune system recognizes them as invaders, activating an immune response that increases inflammation, which in turn can result in acne. This kind of immune response also triggers the release of insulin, which results in raised hormone levels, another cause of acne.
✨Whey Protein - causes acne because it increases the production of a hormone called insulin-like growth factor 1, or IGF-1.
In turn, insulin increases the production of sebum, which is associated with the development of acne. An excellent alternative to regular whey protein is a vegan, plant-based protein powder.
✨Creatine - affects the level of
dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1). DHT and testosterone kick off the whole acne saga in the first place, by making your skin oily.
Androgens bind to the receptors in your sebaceous glands, which has a huge stimulating effect; the glands dramatically rev up their output of sebum.
So, understand ACNE isn’t just a one size fits all issue. Neither is this approach.💜
Blessed and Thankful.
