The Lashing

Giving thanks and praise for travel mercies.

My tribe has returned from (what was for me a month long escapade in) Morocco. We navigated the busy streets of Marrakech, the high Atlas Mountains, the trade routes of the Sahara desert, we ate along the banks of the river and we performed rituals along the coastline our ancestors left in chains!! And so much more!!!

Now we rest.

Today we venerate Oba Sango and Oya Iyansanse Oriri!

Oya is the wind!

Oya is the emissary of swift and irreversible change. She aids in both inner and outer transformations. She is the energy behind tornadoes, rain storms and hurricanes. Oya is the owner of the marketplace and governs trade, commerce and business in general. 

Oya is the guardian of funerals and cemeteries. Oya is heavily involved in clairvoyance, psychic abilities, intuition and rebirth. Oya is the mother of Egungun. She can call forth the spirit of death, or hold it back. Oya is the queen of the Great Mothers, Iyami; also called The Elders of the Night.
Oya is a Savage Warrior. Oya despises injustice, deceit and dishonesty. The Energy of Oya has been called to address the offense of one person and in her wisdom destroyed whole villages.
Oya protects women and feminine leadership. Oys is not an Orisha to be invoked lightly and must be treated with great respect and care. She is the Bringer of Change and The Seeker of Truth.
Her traditional colors are Purple, Orange and burgundy. Her metal is copper.
