RELAXERS

was trying to find a solution to ease the friction in his sewing
machines.

FOR: An early alternative method for curling hair that was
suitable for use on people.

RELAXERS:
Relaxers were created by accident. Mr. Garrett Morgan, an
African American tailor who created other things, mainly for
public safety like the 3-position traffic light, safety hoods, and
smoke detectors. He made the product because he needed to
find a way to ease the friction in his sewing machines. He noticed
it had a major effect on straightening curly tresses and so he first
tried it on the curls of an Airedale dog. When that test was
successful, he tried it on his tresses, and G.A Morgan Hair
Refinery Company was born. The company’s hair relaxer
product, G.A. Morgan’s Hair Refiner, was based on the alkaline
chemicals used to straighten tresses. This product helped to

create other hair-care products, such as dyes, other hair
processing creams, and the curved-tooth pressing comb.
