Climate change has intensified pollen seasons, wildfires, tornadoes, and other disasters, resulting in higher levels of small particulate matter (PM). PM encompasses dust, pollen, mold, smoke, and combustion byproducts, with particle sizes ranging from 2.5 to 10 microns, depending on their source. For context, a micron is 1/1000 mm (1/25,000th of an inch). PM can enter the body via skin absorption and inhalation. Generally, PM particles do not pe*****te the skin immediately; they adhere to the surface, releasing various PM, gases, chemicals, and soluble elements. These can infiltrate the epidermis through hair follicles or a compromised skin barrier. The effects of PM on the skin and on various conditions, such as acne, are influenced by factors like immunity, age, environmental conditions, pollutants, and UV exposure, which can increase sebum production through inflammatory markers. Other skin issues, such as rosacea, hyperpigmentation, eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis, may also be affected. Moreover, plant pollen can elicit a histamine response, acting as an allergen, potentially exacerbating existing acne lesions by increasing oxidative stress and fostering bacterial growth.
