Brush Less to Limit Hair Loss
Don't believe that myth about 100 brush strokes a day. Too much brushing will snap off hairs. Some hair loss is normal – most people lose 50 to 100 hairs every day. These have stopped growing and have reached a resting stage. To keep from losing any more hair than normal, use a brush with ball-tipped bristles. And never brush wet hair; use a comb instead.

Don’t Skip Regular Trims
Regular trims are essential for keeping your hair healthy and strong. Even if you’re growing it out, trimming every 6–8 weeks helps prevent split ends from traveling up the hair shaft, reducing breakage. Healthy ends also make your hair look thicker, shinier, and easier to manage.

Know your hair type
Getting to know your hair can prevent you from wreaking havoc on innocent strands. So, before you pick up a heating tool or brush, learn to distinguish your hair type. Hair typically falls under two categories: Fine and thick.
Your hair is fine if a single strand is hard to see; you struggle with maintaining volume; and locks never feel heavy. You have fewer strands, which are super skinny.
Your hair is thick if it feels coarser; bobby pins can’t hold styles in place; and your biggest problem is taming frizz. You seem to have an infinite amount of strands and they weigh a ton.

Mend Split Ends With Protein
If you often style your hair with hot tools -- or you color, bleach, or perm a lot -- you can damage hair's protective outer layer. The result is "split ends." Thankfully, there are hair products to help mend the damage. Look for conditioners with protein. They sink into the hair shaft and repair split ends. The fix only lasts until the next shampoo, so you'll need to use them regularly.

Protect Shine With Lukewarm Water
Hot water can strip the protective oils that act as a natural conditioner. And your hair's natural shine can disappear. This doesn't mean you have to suffer through cold showers to avoid dull hair. Instead, use lukewarm water to wash your hair. Pamper the scalp by massaging it while you shampoo.

Boost Thin Hair With Silicone
Thin, lifeless hair is a common complaint, yet few women know the best remedy. Heavy conditioners will just leave your hair limp. A better bet is to use products with silicone, such as dimethicone or cyclomethicone. These coat the strands with a thin film, creating fuller hair that doesn't look greasy. The silicone stays put even after you rinse.

Eat a healthy diet and drink plenty of water
Eat a diet rich in protein, essential fatty acids, and B-vitamins to help give your body the nutrients it needs to produce keratin, the structural protein in your hair and nails. Drink plenty of water to help keep skin and hair hydrated as well.

Get regular haircuts
Trim your hair every 3 to 7 weeks if it’s short or bobbed, every 8-12 weeks for textured curly hair, and at least every 12 weeks for long hair to remove damaged or split ends and keep the shape of your hair style. Regular trims are a must for keeping your hair healthy, no matter your hair type.

Care for your hair while you sleep
Pull long hair back into a loose braid or put hair up into a sleep cap. Also try changing out your cotton or microfiber pillowcase for a silk or silk-alternative one. The smoother fabric can help prevent or reduce tangling while you sleep.

Protect and moisturize your scalp
Your scalp can get quite dry, especially if the air is dry, you over-shampoo, or it’s exposed to the sun. Wear hats and scalp sunscreen when going out in the sun, run a humidifier in your home if your indoor air is dry, shampoo less often and use a moisturizing shampoo. Use a deep scalp treatment as needed to hydrate your scalp if it’s gotten dry and flaky.
