While I enjoy "Deep Massage Society", over the years I have become less happy with facebook. When I post something here, due to facebook algorithms, many people who follow this page, never receive the writings. So, two years ago I started a free newsletter, "Putting the Soul Back in the Body". It is there that I put virtually all of my new writings, that previously would have been on Deep Massage

Is This Blue: Chilean Philosophers Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela on Love and How We Know the World 05/18/2026

Years ago, I was lucky to be included in an unusual group of people which sometimes included Humberto Maturana, the Chilean nurobiologist. I had to stretch to understand what he was saying and, to this day, I still do. Today I was excited to see his work mentioned by Maria Popova. His work and many others point us to the centrality of LOVE in life. Let's stretch our minds and hearts with this knowing. Find our way back to love again and again.

Is This Blue: Chilean Philosophers Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela on Love and How We Know the World Once, in an extreme of despair, I posed to my therapist a version of the haunting thought experiment Mary’s Room: How, I asked her, can a person who has never been modeled healthy, secure, st…

Today is the birthday of Dr. Fritz Smith, one of the greatest teachers in the history of massage and bodywork and a wonderful, kind human being.

I loved studying with him for 35 years. I encourage you to read his biography. It is the only biography of anyone in the history of bodywork - and a well-deserved tribute.

Clip of Maya Angelou speaking at a conference on “Facing Evil” in the Hill Country of central Texas. From Moyers & Company via YouTube.

Maya Angelou was one of my earliest inspirations. I was introduced to her work at age 7 when I was tasked with memorizing and performing her famous poem “Still I Rise” for an audience of parents and children at my daycare center. It challenged me to understand myself, for the first time in my life, as part of artist lineage, and that’s when I understood that I could exist beyond the constraints of my immediate surroundings and impact others in ways I could not know simply by being my authentic self.

Saturn in Aries will challenge the ego. We all have a responsibility to exist despite overwhelming obstacles and hostile resistance. For the next 2 and a half years, we will face personal indignities we’ve not known before, and must innovate ways to overcome the existential threat of war without succumbing to exhaustion or losing the plot.

In times like these where painting feels like the least important thing to do, I try to gravitate towards art that genuinely moves me, to remind myself why I must stay open and lead with my heart, especially when methods of the mind hold little sway in the kakistocratic world of the moment.

Maya Angelou, born April 4th, was an Aries and lived an extremely difficult life. She had a Pisces Mercury– a poet’s placement. She represents to me the self-compassion, bravery and pioneering spirit we need to embody to face the increasingly difficult circumstances of the moment. As angry and frustrated as I am, I also have a ton of hope for the future because people like her exist. 05/02/2026

"...Who only by moving can balance,
Only by balancing move."

dedicated to Zero Balancing and our every move -

MACHINES

Dearest, note how these two are alike:
This harpsicord pavane by Purcell
And the racer's twelve-speed bike.

The machinery of grace is always simple.
This chrome trapezoid, one wheel connected
To another of concentric gears,
Which Ptolemy dreamt of and Schwinn perfected,
Is gone. The cyclist, not the cycle, steers.
And in the playing, Purcell's chords are played away.

So this talk, or touch if I were there,
Should work its effortless gadgetry of love,
Like Dante's heaven, and melt into the air.

If it doesn't, of course, I've fallen. So much is chance,
So much agility, desire, and feverish care,
As bicyclists and harpsicordists prove

Who only by moving can balance,
Only by balancing move.

SIMONE WEIL, PHILOSOPHER AND SPIRITUAL ACTIVIST

INSIGHTS FOR POETS AND BODYWORKERS

"Two forces rule the universe: light and gravity."

"There is only one fault: the incapacity to feed upon light."

"To come down by a movement in which gravity plays no part...
...Gravity makes things come down, wings make them rise: what wings raised to the second power can make things come down without weight?"

note from DL:
Doing ZB with someone last week, she said something I think is quite beautiful (if you know ZB it makes even more sense): She said as she stood after the session - "I feel more weighty without feeling heavy."
