Why Halloween Is The Perfect Time To Be K/nky? 🎃

What is it about Halloween that makes exploring our fantasies feel a little less intimidating? Beyond costumes and spooky thrills, Halloween creates an opportunity to experiment with identity, confidence, and self-expression.

Research suggests that k/nk-related fantasies are more common than many people realize. From roleplay to exploring different power dynamics, curiosity about the unfamiliar is a natural part of human s//xuality. And while fantasies don't always translate into real-life desires, they can open meaningful conversations about boundaries and preferences.

The best part? Exploration doesn't have to end when Halloween does. Consent, communication, and curiosity matter all year round.

Want to explore your desires with greater confidence? Our FREE Yes/No/Maybe "CHECKLIST" will help kickstart these conversations!

Behind Every Expert Is A Story Worth Hearing 💜

And that's what makes this community meaningful. It's not just about what we know, but what we can learn from one another.

Women Are Treated For UTIs They Don't Have! 🔬

What if recurring urinary symptoms aren't always caused by a urinary tract infection?

A 2026 study involving 253 women with recurrent UTI diagnoses revealed a concerning pattern. Only 15% had infections limited to the bladder or urinary tract, while 85% showed signs of hormonally influenced v//lvar inflammation and 75% had pelvic floor dysfunction.

These findings highlight an often-overlooked reality in women's healthcare: burning, urinary urgency, and pelvic discomfort don't always mean a bacterial infection is present.

Hormonal changes during menopause can contribute to genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), while overactive pelvic floor muscles can produce similar symptoms. When these conditions are mistaken for recurring UTIs, patients may receive repeated antibiotic treatments without addressing the underlying problem.

As study co-author Dr. Maria Uloko emphasizes, understanding the relationship between hormones, v//lvar tissue, and pelvic floor function is essential to more comprehensive care. Accurate assessment matters because effective treatment begins with identifying what's actually causing the symptoms.

🔥 The Science Of Menopause Care Is Evolving. Are You Keeping Up? Join Dr. Maria Uloko and other leading experts at our November 7–8 online workshop, This Girl Is Still On Fire: Perimenopause & Menopause, to explore emerging research and approaches to menopause care.

What Happens When Menopause Care Isn't Gender-Affirming? 🏳️‍⚧️

For many gender-diverse individuals, navigating menopause can mean facing challenges that go beyond physical symptoms.

Lasara Firefox Allen, MSW, shares their experience of seeking menopause care as a nonbinary person, only to encounter healthcare providers who struggled to acknowledge or respect their gender identity.

Without access to the affirming care they needed, Allen began educating themselves, an experience that eventually contributed to their work advocating for more inclusive menopause education.

Their story highlights an important gap in healthcare: menopause isn't experienced exclusively by women, and effective care requires recognizing each patient's identity, language preferences, and individual needs.

For professionals, gender-affirming care begins with listening, respecting how patients identify, and continuing to learn.

Million Women Revealed A Hidden Pattern In Menopause 🔬

What if menopause changes more than your hormones? A massive study analyzing over 300 million laboratory tests from more than 1 million women suggests that menopause may involve significant biological shifts throughout the body.

Researchers found abrupt changes in 52 of 90 laboratory measures around the final menstrual period, including markers related to bone health, cholesterol, and liver and kidney function. Women using menopausal hormone therapy showed smaller shifts in some measures, although the study could not establish cause and effect.

These findings reinforce an important message: menopause care should go beyond hot flashes and night sweats. Understanding the broader health implications is essential for providing comprehensive, evidence-informed care.

🔥 Want to deepen your expertise? Join our November 7–8 online “WORKSHOP,” This Girl Is Still On Fire: Perimenopause & Menopause. Explore the evolving science and learn practical approaches to supporting clients and patients.

What?! The Gonorrhoea Vaccine Doesn't Work? 💉

A promising STI prevention strategy just faced an unexpected setback.

Earlier research suggested that a meningitis B vaccine could reduce gonorrhoea infections by approximately 30–40%. But a major Australian clinical trial involving 587 men found almost identical infection rates between vaccinated participants and those receiving a placebo.

The estimated vaccine efficacy? -0.5%, with no statistically significant protective effect demonstrated.

Importantly, this doesn't mean the vaccine is ineffective against meningitis B. It means researchers haven't demonstrated protection against gonorrhoea in this trial.

The findings highlight why rigorous clinical research matters. Promising early results don't always translate into proven prevention, and s//xual health professionals must stay informed as the evidence evolves.

The Work Isn't Always Easy. But It's Always Worth Learning More. 💜

Working in s//xual health means navigating complex conversations, challenging assumptions, and recognizing that there's always more to understand.

No matter how much experience we have, there's always a new perspective to consider, a question worth asking, or an opportunity to approach our work differently.

That's why continuing education matters.

At S//xual Health Alliance, we believe that becoming a better professional isn't about having all the answers. It's about staying curious, challenging what we think we know, and building the knowledge and skills to provide more informed, compassionate care.

Because when we invest in our education, the impact goes beyond our own professional growth. It reaches the individuals, couples, and communities we serve.

Wait… You Can Get Diarrhea From S//x? 🦠

Yes, and the growing concern isn't just the infection itself. It's antibiotic resistance.

Shigella is a bacterium that causes diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. It can spread through s//xual contact when microscopic traces of infected f***l matter reach someone's mouth.

According to a 2026 CDC report, extensively drug-resistant Shigella increased from 0% of tested isolates in 2011–2015 to 8.5% in 2023.

That matters because these infections can be harder to treat, making prevention and early recognition increasingly important.

And while Shigella has been documented in s//xual networks, anyone can become infected.

The takeaway? S//xual health education needs to address more than traditional STIs. Understanding transmission, hygiene, and emerging health risks is essential for informed care.
