Mekatilili wa Menza was a prophetess and fearless warrior who led her people, the Giriama, to rebel against British imperialism. Born in the 1860s, she is remembered for slapping a British colonial administrator after disagreement over their imperialist policies and attempts to subdue them.

Mekatilili wa Menza the Mother of resistance, a heroine from Kenya, who rebelled and fought the colonial invaders. She once said " I am not afraid to speak the truth and fight for my people. My powers come from Kaya, rooted in the spirits of our ancestors"

She was a distinguished, vocal and fearless leader and defended the rights of her people the Giriama by putting up a resistance from the white invaders of their land.
She led the Giriama uprising against the British colonist. Who were stealing big fertile lands from the people, collecting taxes from the people and their banning of the local brew palm wine(mnazi).

Mekatilili used kifudu dance which was performed during funeral ceremonies to mobilize the people to resist the colonial government or offer forced labor. An oath taking was administered to her followers to bind them to fight for their community and for their lands.

The first time she was captured by the white men and detained in kisii Kenya where she managed to find her way back home after five years and the struggle for freedom continued.

The second time she was captured and detained in Kismayu in Somali but she still managed to find her way back home and the struggle for liberation continued.

She died around 1925 and was buried at Bungale Ulaya Kwa Jele in Magarini constituency Malindi district. where a cultural festival was held in her honor.

At some point today, you'll see outlets show a video that illustrates what we've been screaming, and that is that on January 8, 2022, Deaughn Willis was killed by an East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Deputy (EBRSO) after a Deputy aggressively banged on a residential door and never announced themselves as officers.

You'll find the door that the Deputy shot through in the photo below. EBRSO has bodycam footage and a recorded 911 call Deaughn's Mother placed to emergency services in fear because she didn't know who was angrily banging on her door. At this point, how is the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office allowed to remain quiet?

His mother, Mrs. Trinelle Willis, a nurse, tried to give her son Deaughn medical aid that day but was denied. Family members predict that at least 30 minutes would pass before Deaughn Willis would receive medical assistance from first responders.

When we hear from EBRSO, I imagine they'll probably say some nonsense like Mrs.Trinelle tried to hide a gun or escape through a window while pretending to aid her son. You know, something heartless like that.

We call on EBRSO to do the right thing – the easy thing: release the tapes.

While I appreciate everything that Ted James said and I stand with him and applaud his courage, what about the men who are arrested for nothing or little of nothing or something. Until we deal with why our bodies are targeted we will allow the voices of oppression to hold criminalization of black skin for PROFIT to persist. The beast that makes PROFIT off of their incarceration will persist. There is PROFIT in our detainment, there is PROFIT in our criminalization. We are and have always been PROFITABLE to this society. As long as the conversation is only the death and not the reason for the traffic stop or the escalation, then I feel we miss the point . There is PROFIT in arresting every black body that can be snatched . There is PROFIT in every traffic stop every supposed suspicious action. In every fight or argument or misunderstanding or every out and out lie , in every accusation, there is PROFIT in detaining, criminalizing, prosecuting and targeting of Black bodies . They make money , whether it is through quotas, grants , tax incentives, fear for public safety etc THERE IS PROFIT. THIS IS BIG BUSINESS. From the vendors that provide commodities, phone services or monitoring . Please understand we are a commodities and always have been. Educate yourselves on Prison labor or vendor contracts. They have to arrest us , demonize our very existence to justify feeding the beast . The business of criminal injustice. Selah

Early Voting Day Two

Early voting has been extended by one week in accordance with the Emergency Election Plan and is now June 20-July 4 (excluding Sunday, June 21 and Sunday, June 28) from 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m.

There is a tax renewal for the Sheriff's Department on the ballot that has no information regarding it's purpose.

When the East Baton Rouge Parish Public Library System mileage came up for renewal they accounted for every dime the taxpayers entrusted to them. That is the level of accountability and transparency we should expect from all government agencies.

The days of no accountability to the taxpayers should be over. During these challenging economic times it is shocking that any agency would not provide a thorough and accurate accounting of their past stewardship and a vision and budget for their plans for any future treasure the taxpayers entrust to them.

Demand accountability and transparency now.
