Not every contour concern is caused by excess volume alone. In many cases, skin quality, elasticity, and tissue changes play a major role — especially after weight changes, pregnancy, or natural aging.

In this educational video, Dr. Susan Yang explains why liposuction is not always the best solution and why proper evaluation is so important before choosing a procedure. The goal is not simply removal, but creating balanced, natural-looking results tailored to each patient’s anatomy.

Every patient is different, and the best outcomes start with the right diagnosis and a customized surgical plan.

Thinking about abdominal liposuction? Here’s what “full abdomen” REALLY means.

It’s not spot treatment. Full abdomen lipo often includes the upper belly, lower belly, waist, and flanks, and shaping the transitions so results look smooth and natural… not patchy!

Beautiful abdominal contouring is about artistry, not just fat removal. We want to create harmony and smooth transitions. Every body is different, and the right plan should be customized to your anatomy and goals.

HOT TAKE: Liposuction is NOT the right answer for everyone.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is patients thinking liposuction can fix loose skin. In reality, if skin laxity is the main issue, removing fat alone can sometimes make the abdomen look even looser.

This patient originally came in asking for liposuction to slim her midsection. After examining her skin quality, muscle separation, and overall anatomy, we discussed why a mini tummy tuck would likely give her a better result.

Because her loose skin was mainly below the belly button — and her upper abdomen still had relatively good skin tone — she was a great candidate for a more conservative option instead of a full tummy tuck.

✨ Not every patient needs the “biggest” surgery.
The best procedure is the one that matches YOUR anatomy and goals.

Mini tummy tuck candidates typically have:
• Loose skin mostly below the belly button
• Minimal muscle separation
• Moderate upper abdominal skin tightness
• A round, non-droopy belly button

This procedure is not ideal for significant loose skin above the belly button or major muscle separation.

Am I a good liposuction candidate? Here are 3 easy rules 👇

A larger abdomen can come from:
• Extra fat
• Extra skin
• Stretched muscle fascia

Liposuction removes pinchable fat under the skin, not visceral fat around the organs.

✨ The ideal candidate usually has:
1. Pinchable fat
2. A round belly button
3. A relatively flat stomach underneath the fat

If there’s loose skin or stretched abdominal fascia (common after pregnancy or weight changes) liposuction alone may not fully create a flat stomach. In some cases, a tummy tuck or muscle repair may be needed for the best contour.

Even if you don’t check every box, you may still be a great candidate. It’s all about expectations and the right treatment plan.

Thinking about Postpartum Liposuction to feel like yourself again? When examining candidates, I’m looking at shape, skin, and structure. Notice how this patient is FLAT (minimal muscle separation), has no hanging skin, and minimal skin laxity.

👉 The pinch test tells me: is there fat we can remove?

In this case: YES, a little in the paraumbilical area and flanks. But here’s the key: she’s already flat.
So if we only do liposuction, she’ll still be flat… just with slightly less volume.

The plan depends on what you start with:
• Flat → think refinement
• Round → we need a different conversation

The right diagnosis is everything.

“I don’t want fake. I just want curves in the right places.” 👈 that’s exactly what a well-planned BBL is designed to do! We use your own fat to enhance your contour in a way that matches your frame. Your waist drives your curves, so reducing waist volume is the first step in creating that hourglass shape ⏳ adding fat to your buttocks or hip dips is the final touch ✨

Ideal candidates typically have:
- Adequate donor fat (abdominal fat is best)
- Good skin quality (elasticity to allow room for fat)
- Preexisting fat in the buttocks to share nutrients with the new donor fat
