I love local history! This is a great story and reminds how happy I am to have the tools of modern cosmetology on my side.

in March 15, 1906 Frozen pipes exploded in old town:
“Thousands of splinters and pieces of broken glass mark the path of one of the most terrific explosions that ever occurred in this city. By the explosion of a Bellingham acetylene machine, the first floor of the Adams building at 504 West Holly Street, occupied by M. Alice’s dermatologist, hairdressing and chiropodist parlors, is in ruins, the woodwork torn into shreds and the heavy plate front glass broken into a thousand pieces. The explosion occurred at about 11 o’clock today. The concussion shook the city for blocks away. There was no warning to persons nearby. A deafening roar followed by the clink of broken glass which fell from the windows of all buildings within a radius of six blocks. The roar was followed by a cloud of black smoke, and in the path of the disaster there were seen remnants of boards and wood in the immediate vicinity of the machine… Mrs. M. Alice, proprietor of the hair dressing parlors was in the center room in front of the electric dryer having her hair shampooed. She turned the faucet on the hot water heater which is connected by pipes with the acetylene plant. The hair dryer consumes a great deal of gas, and the turning on of the hot water heater started the gas machine in the rear to working… The pipes through which the gas must pass were frozen and the explosion was inevitable, as the gas must escape and if all avenues are obstructed an explosion must necessarily follow… Mrs. Alice ran bareheaded to her sister’s house at the west of the city… Mrs. Alice and her assistant, Gertrude Williams, a colored woman, were in the building at the time the accident occurred. Miss Williams was in the rear room near the gas stove when the explosion occurred. She was hurled to the floor and struck on the head by a falling piece of timber, but miraculous as it may seem, suffered slight injury and in less than an hour afterward was at work in cleaning up the debris that was scattered through the building… it was a miracle that Mrs. Alice and Miss Williams were not instantly killed…"
