Was recently asked to list the numerous places around the world where I've had massages, to boil the list down to a top ten, a difficult task for me, a spa ju**ie. Some highlights include: 1. a floating massage outdoors in autumn in Iceland's Blue Lagoon, Basalt Architects 2. a four hand massage just outside of Siem Reap, La Résidence d'Angkor 3. post a sunrise photography session and hike at Borobudur Temple, a plunge in a volcanic tub of warm water with herbs, spices, and flowers across the valley from the temple chased by a massage on a table with a view to the temple, The Plataran 4. a massage on a table perched on a cliff in the Mamanuca islands of Fiji, Matamanoa 5. a massage in a little hut sited amidst a coffee plantation just outside Ngorongoro, The Farm House - the massage was so-so, but the location, and that I could get a massage there was a stunner 6. Vals, Zumthor's Therme: all the pools, and a private color bath therapy, followed by a massage with a valley view back when no cameras were allowed in the therme/pre-instagram 7. At the edge of the Andaman Sea on the massage plinths by Duangrit Bunnag at Costa Lanta, with the wind and sound of the sea creating the music that lulled me away while the masseuse walked all over me Thai style 8. In the jungle surrounded by several species of monkey including endangered red colubus and 400 year old baobab trees in an open air hut in Southern Zanzibar, an amazing couple of massages at Fumba's Beach Lodge (Sharon and Grace - I miss you.) 9. Mii Amo, Sedona AZ, US, I've spent a total of two weeks there in my life, having been three times. Some of the therapists work on Olympic athletes, I've had more than 30 treatments and massages there...umhm, Gluckman Mayner Architects and Ten Eyck L.A. 10. Bali, oh Bali, maybe the best that I had there was in North Bali on the edge of the sea, on simple bed, just before dark, Cilik's Beach Garden - there are so many that remain unmentioned...
