🏃♀️ Walk to Run: Breathing & Mental Strategies
This week's class focused on something many new runners don't think about—your breathing and mindset.
One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is running faster than they can comfortably maintain.
When your heart rate gets too high, your breathing becomes difficult to control, making the run feel much harder than it needs to.
🫁 This week's takeaway:
Run at a pace where you can control your breathing.
If you're gasping for air, slow your pace. Controlled breathing usually means you're running at an effort you can sustain, helping you build endurance and enjoy your runs more.
We also talked about mental strategies that can make running feel easier:
✔ Focus on one interval at a time.
✔ Don't worry about your total distance.
✔ Celebrate small improvements each week.

Is Your IT Band Really the Problem?
This week alone, I evaluated several patients who came in convinced they had a "tight IT band."
What surprised them most?
In many cases, the IT band wasn't the primary problem.
Pain along the outside of the hip or knee is often influenced by how the hip, pelvis, and lower back are moving. That's why simply stretching or foam rolling the IT band doesn't always provide lasting relief.
Instead of asking, "Where does it hurt?" we ask:
"Why is it hurting?"
That answer helps determine whether you would benefit most from improving mobility, building strength, changing movement patterns, chiropractic care, rehabilitation, shockwave therapy, or a combination of approaches.
Because the right treatment starts with the right evaluation.

Today’s Walk-to-Run topic was strength for runners 💪🏃♀️
We talked about why strength training matters for runners, how it can help improve running form and efficiency, and how building a stronger foundation may help reduce the risk of injury as mileage increases.

What's the best treatment for back pain?
It's one of the most common questions I hear, and my answer is always the same:
It depends.
Two people can have the same back pain but need completely different treatment plans.
One person may need to improve spinal mobility. Another may need better stability and movement control. Someone else may simply need to build strength.
That's why we don't believe in one-size-fits-all treatment.
Before recommending chiropractic care, rehabilitation, or specific exercises, we first identify what's actually causing the problem. The right treatment should always match the patient—not just the diagnosis.

Neck pain doesn’t always stay in the neck.
Depending on where the dysfunction is occurring, symptoms can show up in different ways:
Lower neck irritation may refer to the shoulders or arms.
Upper neck tension is often associated with headaches or base-of-skull pain.
In some cases, upper cervical dysfunction may also contribute to jaw tension, dizziness, or difficulty with reading and concentration.

🏃♂️ Walk-to-Run Session: Running Gear That Actually Matters
This week we had a special guest join our Walk-to-Run program — Chris from XtraMile Running in Schaumburg — to talk about something most runners overlook:
footwear, socks, and running apparel.
While training plans and consistency are important, the right gear can make a big difference in comfort, injury prevention, and overall performance.
We discussed:
✔ How proper running shoes can affect impact and recovery
✔ Why sock choice actually matters more than most people think
✔ How apparel can influence comfort, temperature regulation, and performance
✔ What to look for when selecting running gear as a beginner runner

Most people don’t develop low back pain from one big injury.
It usually builds over time from repeated movement patterns — especially how we bend.
One of the most common patterns we see is bending through the low back instead of the hips.
A simple tool we use is a dowel rod to help identify whether someone is maintaining proper spinal alignment during movement.
If the head, mid-back, or tailbone lose contact, the body is compensating — which can increase stress on the spine over time.
The good news is this can often be corrected with better movement awareness, hip mobility, and stability training.
