In 2003 I learned about Dr Temple Grandin in vet school and I was fully in animal behavior, we did some projects and I considered to add a degree in psychology to complete my neuroscience understanding, in 2009 I considered post grad in Animal behavior Science but my traveling job as a consultant couldn’t fit with the full 4y program.

When I moved to the US I had 2 idols on my bucket list Alan Jackson ✅ and Temple (I have attended her yearly speeches in KC for the Autism society) 2x.

20 y later I would never imagine to be in her classroom (on her territory) appreciating her regular classes at Animal Science department at Colorado state. For those students there it was one more day but for us was like little kids meeting Santa for the first time.

It was unique and I wish I was 5% smart as she is, but my job is to share her legacy. My first job after vet school was in quality assurance for a swine harvest plant and I did a lot work with animal welfare and wrote SOP to train employees and farmers in how correctly handle animals.
We also had a tour at beef processing plant from the animal science facility. 😻😍
Meet science is one of my favorites areas.

Remember: you never know where you will be in 20 y from now! Do NOT miss opportunities to learn and to grow!

This was a last minute trip, a volunteer and out of pocket bc all of us are fan of her work and we could not miss this unique opportunity.

This week I talked to a working entrepreneur successfully mom of 3 and expecting the 4th and she said : “you need to come to my area to hangout with me I need that accountability… you know the mom guilt… I think I will spend 1 h at gym while I could be with my kids”

My answer to her was: I can relate but I know Joy can only have the best of me if I have my gym alone time.

We are all guilty in prioritizing anything else than the basics - to take care of our body and spirit (BOTH are important) you don’t do much or don’t get further if your “ machine “ is broken and if the fuel and engine of your machine is “ slow” (mind).
Mental health is as important as to spend time with our child.

She agreed with me immediately and said I will change my way to think of it.

Maybe not 1 h but 30-45 min/ day. I can’t imagine to manage 4 kids and a company without a break.

Joy deserves a present mom!

But she deserves a fully present mom, not a mom full of stress and with mind all over the place and impatient.

She needs a mom who can take care her well and for that this mom needs to be strong physically and mentally.

For me there is not separation between Maribel athlete, professional, student, believer, mom, wife. It is all interdependent.

one builds the other… and you all know… to survive this world we must be mental and spiritual strong, the physical is a consequence of the first 2..

If I take selfies with the college students will it make younger? Ask for a friend 😂

God blessed me with a strong passion for fitness, for Veterinary and for helping to guide people and I CAN’T keep it up for myself.
He gave me the sanguine, lion, enneagram 8… to be used and I daily pray: use me Lord!
If I feel useful and with a purpose… it moves me and pump my energy!

These girls said: hey Dr Nelson, I am starting to workout again and idk what to do.
Me: no problem, let’s do a basic plan for u! We worked out together and I am thankful for the day break!

They may get sore tomorrow but it is part of the restart to move! Megan is part of UAM rodeo team and it is essential for them to be prepared for their activities avoiding major injuries. The stronger and stable joints they have, connecting core and developing flexibility will lead them to a better athlete (yes rodeo is a sport and demands a lot from their body).
They are young and the better they take care themselves now longer they can go with their passion.

You both did great today 🔥🥰

When we say consistency to have consistent results we talk about days, weeks, months and years of training your mind 1st through practicing discipline and consequently training your body to do what you sometimes don’t want to do.

When someone comes with the idea of : I have done everything and nothing really work.
My question is? For how long have you done it consistently?
You can’t expect to live a “free” not caring life for several years and expect to change your routine for few weeks and have magical results. That is just so obvious rational thought but people like to deny and run away from facing their lies.

I highly advocate for a lifestyle you can sustain for life… for years. That is why I do believe keto and fasting can be a strategy for some people to start a plan but I do not believe as a sustainable way for life.

DISCIPLINE IS REPEATING REPEATING IT DAY AFTER DAY FOR YEARS.NOT for days!
My goal for my clients was that they became independent of me and can sustain their healthy body weight and body composition for the wedding in few months ahead or in 10/20 y from
Now.

For several years I worked traveling and from hotel to hotels- I carried my resistance bands and TRX, my snacks and sometimes my meals. I checked ahead the options for ideal meals around the farms I was visiting. I planned ahead my weeks. In the beginning I was learning to choose better or ideal to sustain my specific goals.

And no!
I didn’t grow up active or in sports!
I woke up for my life choices when I lost my dad for a stroke in 2010 and I needed to decide or I have the same life ends or I choose to be against what my “genetics” can lead me to.

Yes your genetic does NOT dictate your destination but your choices DO!

Pizza saturday!
For long time now we prefer to build our pizzas at home!
We buy the GF cheese pizza from Costco (so I can eat more than one slice and not get a bloating).

We prefer it bc we can add our toppings = adding more protein
What increase our protein intake per portion and meal= why? Bc if you add more protein to all your meals you get more satiated for longer, what helps you to control portions and not overeating or snacking all day long.
It also helps us to reach our daily Intake of protein (an essential macronutrient that most of you do NOT eat enough as you think you do).

As We age we require MORE protein per lb of body weight (and majority of population does the opposite).
Not ideal protein intake= compromises immunity, can speed loss of muscle mass, can compromise brain functions, joint quality and exercise recovery. Hair and skin issues etc… so much more.

So we try to transform a low nutritional dense meal in a more completed meal!
If you don’t know how to start, start focusing on what you are eating too little and be crazy over what you shouldn’t be eating.
FOCUS IN YOUR PROTEIN INTAKE AND MAKE IT A CONSISTENT AND PRIORITY IN ALL YOUR MEALS!
