Bacterial acne and hormonal acne differ in their causes and treatments.

Bacterial Acne

Bacterial acne results from the overgrowth of Cutibacterium acnes in clogged pores, often leading to red, inflamed pimples, whiteheads, and blackheads. It typically appears on the face, back, and chest. Common treatments include:

• Benzoyl peroxide (kills bacteria)
• Salicylic acid (exfoliates pores)
• Topical or oral antibiotics (for severe cases)

Hormonal Acne

Hormonal acne is caused by fluctuations in hormones, especially androgens, which increase oil production. It usually appears as deep, painful cysts around the jawline and chin, often worsening around menstrual cycles. Treatments often include:

• Birth control pills
• Spironolactone (reduces oil production)
• Retinoids (topical)

Key Differences

• Cause: Bacteria vs. hormone changes.
• Appearance: Surface pimples vs. deep cysts.
