Today’s Mini Lesson: How to Properly Clean Your Face 🧼🧖🏼♀️🥰
Growing up, I had quite a bit of issues with my skin. Acne, inflammation, scarring, dark circles, clogged pores, oily skin, dry patches, you name it! I tried every product I could get my hands onto, from Clean n’ Clear all the way to Dermalogica. Some of the products helped a little bit, some of them made my skin worse. What finally worked for me, what finally made my skin feel happy and healthy like I was 5 again, was understanding how to properly clean and maintain my skin. Sure, I used one of the most expensive products on the market, but it didn’t do nearly enough for me until I could finally understand how to properly use it. So now, I’m going to share that with you!
Step one: Take a good look at your skin. What’s going on there? Is it oily? Dry? A little bit of both? Are your pores tight or open? Are you breaking out above the surface, or underneath?
Once you identify your problems, you can then plan how to solve them.
Step Two: Let’s clean and then clean some more! Double wash. That’s right. You’re going to cleanse your face TWICE with a cleanser suitable for your skin type.
Oily Skin: You can pre-cleanse (first wash) with OIL! 🤯 The oil in the pre-cleanse will grab the oil and build-up on your face ( oil grabs oil, water repels oil, good ol’ science! ) and make room for us to get a deeper cleanse with your second cleanse!
Dry and Combination Skin: Your skin is thirsty. It needs hydration and moisture to keep it healthy. Drinking water and using a gentle, moisturizing cleanser will boost your skins rebuilding system, which means brighter, tighter, happier skin.
The reason we cleanse our skin twice is to 1. Remove the days build up of makeup, dirt, oil, pollution, etc. on the skin
2. Once the buildup is removed, the second cleanse can then clean deeper into your epidermis.
Step 3: Exfoliation
Now this is an important one. Gently exfoliating your skin allows the buildup to be loosened and removed. This takes care of any dead skin cells, clogged pores, sebum, and all the other gunk you don’t need. You only need to exfoliate about 1-2 times weekly.
Step 4: Masks
Masks should be done 1-2 times a week, depending on what your using and how your skin reacts to it. Fortunately, there are TONS of different masks for different jobs. Here are some examples:
Hydrating Masks: Some masks have natural humectants in them that allow the skin to stay hydrated over time. Ingredients like honey, aloe, and coconut are great for this purpose.
Clay Masks: These masks are great for drying up any excess oils on the skin, or clearing up any acne breakouts.
Mud Masks: Similar to Clay Masks, but water-based, so it is more hydrating than drying.
There are many, MANY more masks to choose from, but these are a few of the more common ones.
Step 5: Toner
What is Toner? A toner is an alcohol-based solution that helps remove excess dirt and oil and tighten your pores, helping to prevent any huge pimples later on. You can also use an astringent, like Witch Hazel, which typically has a higher alcohol percentage.
Step 6: Moisturize and SPF
Last but not least, it’s time to moisturize your skin. We’ve removed all of the gunk, put nutrients back into your skin, and have synched everything back up. Now it’s time to seal it with a lightweight moisturizer and sun protectant. An SPF of at least 30 is recommended for your face; the sun can have lasting damaging affects to your skin, including spotting and wrinkles. Give your skin the protective barrier it needs and it’ll thank you in the long run.
Whelp that’s it in a nutshell guys.
Cleanse, cleanse again, exfoliate, mask, tone, moisturize and spf. The basic steps to having healthier skin.
