Now I'll always have a little Tanglewood with me 💚
Tanglewood is where I've had most of my happiest memories and moments. These last months have been quite brutal and challenging. I wanted to do something to remind myself of my joy and peace. We've spent every summer at tanglewood since 2002. My kids are both summer babies and took their first steps on the lawn in front of the shed and in the sand at the BSO beach on the stockbridge bowl. I can't wait to go every summer and I am most alive and at ease there, where I feel I truly belong; immersed in nature, music, and a community that's more like family.
Adding some classes this fall. Heated flow on Mondays, 9:15am
6:45pm continuing vinyasa (75 min)
Fridays 4pm flow
I've missed you. Come to practice!
My sister recently reminded me that some people don't like to ask for help because it makes them feel vulnerable. Maybe that's why students of yoga sometimes don't want to use props. Maybe the use of a prop exposes a vulnerability in our practice. What do you think?
Here is a sequence that uses a block in a challenging way that is still helpful. It's especially spicy if using a cork or wood block. If you are prop-resistant in your practice give it a try and maybe it can be a way in. You can see me slip in Trikonasana. Ithappened every time. A vulnerability perhaps?
I love working with props and assists, and incorporating the wall in my practice. There is such wealth of information there, and it's so much fun to play with. Playing in your practice helps us learn, it prevents rigidity, stimulates the brain, and helps to keep us consistently coming back to the mat. Because play is also fun.
So go ahead, play with some blocks. It was good for you when you were a toddler, and it's good for you now.
I love using the chair this way for urdvha danurasana because I can press my calves into its feet to get the feeling of drawing my shins towards my forearms and my forearms towards my shins, which helps in lifting the sitbones. It's also nice to hold the chair back for extra length in the arms.

30 YEARS together.
[This is a love letter to so if you're not into that kind of romantic sticky stuff you should probably scroll on].
We met on orientation day, before the start of 9th grade in arts high school. You were a few good inches shorter than me, and had no facial hair yet but already had a bit of fame as a cellist. I had a 14yo kind of crush on you with your sparkling blue-green eyes that gave me butterflies. On the orchestra trip to Europe we became inseparable, especially that final night of the tour when we talked and laughed and made out and stayed up half the night (with our friends, and where were our chaperons??) That was in 1992 and we never separated since then.
We were just kids. Every time I look back at that time in high school it blows my mind how things turned out for us. I think it may seem strange to someone from the outside, the fact that I have never had another relationship (ok, I did have a boyfriend in 4th grade). But it was never really weird to me. We simply grew together, and we made each other happy.
30 years ago it was just you and me and in the end the kids will grow and it will again be just you and me. I will always be proud and grateful and a little bit in disbelief that I am still so much in love with you and that I love you every day a little more. So I can trust that we will find our way back from our disagreements and our anger and we will end up in each other's arms because that is the only place where I feel at home. Of everyone in my world you are the one that knows me and understands me completely, and being fully understood and still respected and deeply loved for who I really am is the best gift I have ever received. There is nothing more precious than you and me.
I was in the car and the song "life is a highway" came on the radio and I thought it's NOTHING like a highway. Life's more like a twisty dirt road that's two way but there's only one lane and a cliff on each side and everyone driving like maniacs, and you and I are not even driving, we are in the passenger's seat clinging to each other's hand and hanging on . But i am doing it because the views are stunning and we're together.
I haven't made a post in a while. Mostly because world events left me speechless and overwhelmed. So here is a little sequence I practiced today (sped up). We did this transition of vasisthasana into ardha matseyandrasana (variation) in class too. It's fun. I've been working and teaching lots of twists, which are heating, and that was helpful with the abrupt return of the 30°f weather.
A few moments of movement and breath and fun make a difference for me. That's all. It makes me feel better (Especially the fun part) And it helps me not to take myself too seriously. Because really, what's the point in that??
See you in class!

This week I was interviewed by NPR for this piece. One of the main points I wanted to make is to encourage other teachers in similar situations to come together and speak out.
This chapter isn't over. I hope we can see through the smoke screens and recognize the need for a meaningful change in the yoga industry, particularly in Boston. Whether you call it exclusivity or non-compete, teachers are still being asked to demonstrate loyalty to earn what they deserve and rewards are promised not on the basis of expertise, education, or experience, but on a scale of loyalty.
Noncompete Agreements Are Everywhere, Even Neighborhood Yoga Studios Yoga studios want to protect their interests. Yoga teachers say they are unfair and should be done away with.
It is so much easier to practice together. Even though we are practicing very different things we are both able to focus. And what's better than having your sun salutations accompanied by a bit of Chopin? Helps slow me down and keeps the breath expansive.

This is slouchy sphinx. It's my favorite pose for shoulders and neck release. I learned it from Barbara Benagh, who I credit so much of my understanding of movement to. She is amazing!
To do the pose, you have to forget everything you've been taught about sphinx or about back bends and simply slouch! Because it seems like you're doing it 'wrong' by slouching, it's a good pose to remind us that there are so many different and wonderful ways to move and that having a veriety and a wide repertoire is excellent.
Set up like you would for sphinx with elbows under or slightly in front of shoulders (I like them a bit wider too), and let the top if your head drop heavily. Let the area between your shoulder blades deepen like a ravine. After a while I like to sway my head gently to feel for different areas if my neck.
Try it and tell me what you felt!
