Why We Don’t Sing Ayahuasca songs and chants in a Peyotl Ceremony.

Every plant medicine carries its own language.
Peyotl and Ayahuasca are both teachers, but they speak through different songs, rhythms, and lineages. A peyotl ceremony is not just a gathering—it is a precise spiritual architecture built of prayer, rattle, drum, breath, and silence. The songs sung there arise from peyotl itself, shaped over generations to match its pace, its vision, and its way of teaching.
Ayahuasca ícaros are not “general medicine songs.” They are living transmissions—specific to the Amazon, to the vine, to the dieta, to the river cultures that carry them. Ícaros call, steer, open, and close Ayahuasca space. When sung elsewhere, they don’t become neutral—they remain active.
Mixing songs across medicines isn’t cultural appreciation; it’s energetic confusion.
In a peyotl ceremony:The rattle carries the prayer.
The drum anchors the heartbeat of the people.
The songs walk in step with peyotl’s long, steady intelligence.
The silences are as important as the notes.
This also applies to modern “New Age” songs—often sung in Spanish—about Ayahuasca, Madre, or the vine. Even when they are well-intended, beautiful, or popular, they still invoke Ayahuasca’s spirit and cosmology. Language alone doesn’t neutralize a song’s function. Singing about Ayahuasca inside a peyotl ceremony calls in a different medicine than the one present, fracturing the ceremonial field and drawing attention away from peyotl’s teachings.
To bring Ayahuasca songs—traditional or modern—into that space is like speaking over an Elder while another is already teaching. It pulls the circle out of coherence and away from the medicine that has been invited to lead.This isn’t about rules.It’s about respect.
Respect for lineage.Respect for spirit.
Respect for the intelligence of each plant.
When each medicine is honored in its own house, with its own songs, it teaches clearly—and safely.
Sing the songs of the medicine you are sitting with.
