What is your ideal hair color undertone and why does it matter?
When I do your hair color, I use swatches and hold them up to your face to determine which tones will make you look the most awake, energized, and tan.
Some hair colors can make you look pale, tired, and washed out, so you feel like you need makeup.
Other hair colors can make you feel more vibrant without any makeup.
The right hair color for you depends on your eye color, skin tone, the season and how much sun you have had recently, and your typical wardrobe and makeup.
How do you know if your hair color is going to make your skin glow and your eyes pop?
We just hold up hair color searches to your face and look in the mirror with natural light. Then we can tell which tone will work best.

You might say your hair is frizzy, unruly, too thick, and hard to manage. Instead, I see possibilities...
For this natural beauty, I created a cut that is wash and go with her natural texture. It looks playful, energetic, youthful and put-together.
I wish I could take credit for her hair color, but that is au natural. To maintain this tone, she keeps it moisturized, trimmed, avoids hot tools and sun over-exposure, and it stays shiny, bright, and stunning.
Do you know someone who would look stunning with this cut?

Natural curls? Yes please. I have come to know and love the natural texture you were born with, and I am here to help you embrace the curl.
There is a special way to cut, wash, condition, brush (or not brush) and style curls, and I love learning about your unique texture.
Book a curly cut and let’s see what beauty we can reveal from within your own natural hair.

What’s it like to be a client? Some salons make clients feel awkward and uncool which makes it impossible to relax.
The Chopping Block ambiance in a word, is comfy.
Sunshine, a great view, snacks, hydration, soft supportive chairs, and your stylist checking in regularly when your hair is processing.
Oh, and the result? That’s not bad either. See for yourself!

There is a graceful and classy way to wear grey hair. It doesn’t have to be yellow or unruly.
If your grey is turning yellow, just add a toner/gloss to your next service and see the shine and natural color blend for yourself.
If you have a lot of white and wish it was more salt and pepper, book a Partial Highlight and I’ll put in low lights and a toner to create dimension and blended shine that lasts for 3 months.

Why do I mentor others? Because I am creating the environment I would want to work in, and to maintain a standard of excellence. I wish I had more mentorship early in my career, so I am providing it for the next generation.
My mentees will do a good job on day 1 with my help, and they will be excellent within 3 years. It took me 10+ years to get that far.
After 20 years in the field, I have sought out and found amazing mentors, but for the first 5+ years I was told to “fake it till you make it.”
I don’t want my stylists to feel like they are winging it and on their own. I don’t think clients want their stylist to be “faking it” either.
That’s why I am here to answer questions and give advice, with encouragement and praise. I also have 2 amazing expert stylists, Monique and Whitney, who mentor the beginners when I’m not available.
My mentees are talented and skilled, and continue to improve because they are not afraid to ask questions and they don’t feel like they have to go in blind.
Do you have good mentors in your life? Do you enjoy mentoring others?

Do you book roots + highlights or just root touch up?
Most of my clients with this style book highlights every third root touch up. Depending how grey you are, you can wait between 4 and 8 weeks between Root Touch Ups.
It’s personal preference, but with current trends looking more grown out like balayage, many clients prefer to wait until their third root touch up to get more highlights added. Getting highlights every time is also an option if you want to see dimension closer to the scalp.
Sometimes we just add lowlights to prevent the ends from looking flat.
Sometimes clients book Root Touch up with Toner if their highlights get too light or brassy between visits.
These highlights are much less likely to fade when you use Davines Heart of Glass Shampoo and Conditioner. The label says “for blondes,” but I have been amazed by the results on brunettes like this.
If you’re not sure what to book, try our new virtual consultation under the hair color category in online booking. See you in the salon!

Do you even want to talk to me? If not, you can…
put your earphones in, read a book, work on your laptop, zone out, flip through TikTok, or enjoy the view of snow falling on Breck.
You might think I’ll be offended, but I really encourage you to have a quiet appointment if that’s your preferred experience. I even ask you about this in your intake form.
I’ll do your hair, and if you want to chat, great. If not, also great. You do you, boo!

What makes a great haircut in your eyes?
A. Getting what you asked for.
B. The stylist ignores your request and does whatever she wants.
C. Getting 5” off when you ask for 1” because you “really needed it.”
D. The stylist doesn’t show up at all
E. The stylist is always 30 min behind and never gives you a heads up.
I have heard of all these things happening when my clients share their haircut trauma history, with me. Instead of causing more harm, I’d like to be a part of healing your hair story.
Wishing you many happy hair days!
-Melanie
