Known botanically as Tacca chantrieri, this extraordinary tropical plant produces one of the most unusual inflorescences in the plant kingdom: deep purple-black bracts that resemble bat wings, with long, threadlike filaments that trail like whiskers or tassels.

Native to the wet tropical regions of Southeast Asia and southern China, Tacca chantrieri is a rhizomatous plant that grows in humid, shaded environments where light is filtered and moisture is abundant.

What appears to be one strange flower is actually a complex flowering structure. The dark “wings” are bracts, modified leaves that frame the smaller true flowers clustered at the center. The long filaments extend outward and downward, giving the plant its uncanny resemblance to a bat in flight, or perhaps a cat with impossibly elegant whiskers.

This is one of the great joys of botany: realizing that plant beauty is not limited to the soft, pretty, or familiar.
