Twenty minutes of exercises, three times a day……no thanks! But that’s the sheet that most people walk out of pelvic floor therapy holding. By week two it’s under a pile of mail and then you’re feeling guilty about not doing your exercises, and about the pile of mail.

Here’s what most people are never told: if your nervous system is stuck in fight or flight, no exercise protocol will hold. When your body thinks it’s being chased by a bear, it doesn’t prioritize digestion, sleep, pleasure, or a pelvic floor that knows how to let go. You can’t strengthen your way out of a muscle that won’t stop guarding.

At The Lifted Lotus in Williamsburg, BK, sessions are an hour of hands-on pelvic floor therapy, and the homework can look much different than you’d expect.

Marlene went deep on this with Dr. Maria () on The Healing Core podcast. DM us “podcast” for the full link, or follow the link in our bio to listen!

You don’t need to apologize or feel weird about a single thing on this list. And one thing about us? We’re going to keep reminding you of that until you believe it.

Queefing during Pilates…air gets in during bridges and then air comes back out. Every instructor here has heard it a thousand times and could not care less. It’s a good sign that your pelvic is reacting to the movement!

Your libido changing through the month…desire rises and falls with your hormones. High around ovulation and lower before your period is textbook. You’re not broken in week four, you’re just in week four.

Not working out every day…if you’re exhausted, overworked, sick, need to rest, or just aren’t feeling it, that’s okay. Muscles rebuild on your days off.

Talking to your pelvic floor therapist about s*x…we encourage this!! Nothing will shock us. People tend to whisper this in the last five mins of a session, but we encourage you to bring it up in the beginning. Questions, observations, curiosity, it’s all welcome and helps us direct your treatment.

Crying on the massage table or mid pelvic floor session…the body stores a lot of stress and trauma in the hips and pelvis, and release can bring up a lot of emotions. We’re here to guide you through that. You never, ever have to apologize for any emotions that come up during sessions.

Not orgasming with pe*******on alone…most women don’t! And that’s due to anatomy. Nothing is wrong with you if it takes more stimulation for you.

Period poops…the same chemical signals that make your uterus contract get your bowels moving too. Totally, completely normal.

What else should be on this list?! We’ll do a part two soon.

Spanx is not a treatment plan❕
Neither is crossing your legs before you sneeze or deciding s*x just feels different now.

If you’re leaking, feeling pelvic heaviness, or hurting during exercise past 3 months postpartum, your recovery needs more than time. And if you have none of those symptoms? You can still benefit from pelvic floor therapy postpartum.

Pregnancy changes your pelvic floor no matter how you delivered or how smooth your recovery feels. In France, pelvic floor therapy is standard postpartum care. Here, it’s more common to get a six week checkup and a wave goodbye. “Feeling fine” and “fully recovered core and pelvic floor” are not the same thing.

A postpartum assessment at our Williamsburg clinic tells you exactly where you stand: how your muscles recovered, how scar tissue is moving, how your core is managing pressure. Things to know before you go back to running, lifting, or planning a next pregnancy.

Symptoms or not, you deserve to know how your body actually healed.

When birth is traumatic, your nervous system treats the pelvic floor like a place that needs protecting. The muscles brace, hold, and stop releasing. Not because something is broken, but because your body protected you and never got the signal that it’s safe to let go.

That guarding can be unlearned through trauma-informed pelvic floor therapy. Nervous system down-regulation, gentle manual therapy and scar tissue work, and breath-led release can help get you there.

If your birth story still lives in your body, you’re not being dramatic and you’re not stuck with it.

Message us if you’re ready to book to start unlearning and we’ll get you booked with Danielle.

The 6-week clearance doesn’t mean your body recovered…it means your incision closed.

Meanwhile, you might still be leaking when you sneeze, bracing through s*x that hurts, and wondering why your core still won’t show up for you.

Here’s what most people are never told: at six weeks postpartum, your pelvic floor may still be in shock from delivery, your core hasn’t reconnected, and your hormones are still shifting. The leaking, heaviness, and pain that show up months or years after that 10-minute check up aren’t the price of having a baby, they’re what happens when postpartum care stops at six weeks.

Postpartum pelvic floor therapy at our Williamsburg clinic closes the gap where the 6-week clearance leaves off. We provide real pelvic floor assessment, core reconnection, and a recovery plan built around your needs specifically.

If you got the green light but your body still doesn’t feel right, message us “ready” and we’ll get you booked.

You are allowed to ask for MORE out of your prenatal care.

Prenatal visits are short, and pelvic floor function usually isn’t on the checklist unless you put it there.

So, put it there! These six questions cover pelvic floor screening during pregnancy, a specialist referral, and a postpartum plan you set up before delivery, not six weeks after.

If your provider answers all of them confidently, great. If the answers are vague, that tells you something too.

Save this for your next appointment. And if you’d rather skip the referral chase, you can book a prenatal pelvic floor consultation with us directly in our bio.

What’s one question you wish you’d asked during pregnancy? Let us know below 🫶🏻

Pregnancy changes your pelvic floor in ways most providers don’t explain, but understanding those changes is part of preparing for birth and recovery.

We see clients during and before pregnancy, not just after. Prenatal pelvic floor therapy is proactive care! We’ll shout this from the rooftop any day 🗣️🩷

Everyone has a pelvic floor, so pelvic health care is for EVERY body.

That includes our trans, nonbinary, and q***r community, including recovery after gender-affirming surgery, men (bladder and bowel issues, pelvic pain, recovery after prostate surgery), and v***a owners at every life stage. None of this belongs to one gender.

At The Lifted Lotus, we specialize in care for v***a-owners, but we have amazing provider recommendations to give for pen*s-owners too.

This Pride month, we want you to know that you’re welcome here, and you’ll be cared for by people who understand your body and your history. You should never have to translate yourself to be taken seriously.

If you’ve been putting off care because you weren’t sure you’d be understood, this is your sign. Message us anytime, or book an appointment at the link in our bio. 🏳️‍🌈
