Trying the local beauty treatments is one of my favorite things about traveling. Working with brides I'd seen lots of henna art, but had never seen the process. Wandering through Little India today in Penang, Malaysia, I decided to give it a try! Fairly simple design, took about 20 minutes to apply, then another 20 of dry time. The color should last 1-2 weeks and fade gradually over time. It cost rm15, or $4. Pretty!

Found this extreme beauty product here in Malaysia. It's a solution of hydroquinone and tretinoin. Hydroquinone is a bleaching agent, which helps lighten discoloration or acne scarring. Asian countries use it vigorously to achieve whiter skin, as that's the desired effect in most south Asian countries.

Hydroquinone is controversial, as it has already been banned in Japan, the EU, and Australia, due to a study that indicates it causes cancer in lab rats. Most countries are still using it, as of 2019.

And tretinoin is the literal holy grail for anti-aging and acne treatment. Most Americans know it by its brand name, Retin-A. Only available by perscription only in the US, this ingredient is readily available, and cheap, for the rest of the world.

Staying pretty is an expensive luxury in the US! I don't appreciate this!!! BTW this bottle cost $2.

Since I started making my own products, it’s amazing to note how I’m able to only use natural ingredients. Cosmetic companies could take all the chemicals out if they wanted to. But it would be expensive, so they leave ‘em in. Buy small-batch, small company products when you can!

Bulgarian grocery store find. Grape oil hand cream. Very nice! Light fragrance, intense hydration for cracked cuticles. Petroleum is in there, but only mid-way down the ingredients list, and seeing as the tube cost about 55 cents, I'll forgive a few impurities.
