Black History Month🖤♥️💚 Black Hair Fact today is the shaved head of slaves

During the transatlantic slave trade, an estimated 12 million African men, women and children were kidnapped and sold into slavery. One of the first things the slave traders did to the people they captured was shave off their hair. Considering the strong spiritual and cultural importance of hair in Africa, it was a particularly dehumanizing act, intended to strip away their connection to their cultures.

When their hair grew back, they no longer had access to the herbal treatments, oils and combs from their homeland. Hair that was once was once a source of pride and expression of identity was often tucked away beneath cloth to cover rough, tangled tresses and shield them from hours spent toiling under the sun. With limited tools and time to care for their hair, people got creative with what they had at their disposal—relying on bacon grease, butter and kerosene as conditioners, cornmeal as dry shampoo and sheep fleece carding tools as combs.

In celebration of Black History💚🖤♥️ month Black Hair Fact today is Braids also known as Cornrows or Plaits

In order to understand the history of braids and Black American hair culture specifically, it is necessary to look at the impact of slavery on African women. Slavery brought not only physical and psychological trauma, but it also brought erasure. In an attempt to strip them of their humanity and culture, traffickers would shave the heads of women. Colonizers effectively attempted to take away the women’s lifeline to their homeland. Braids were also known to be used to hide rice or seeds in their hair in order to have food to eat on their Middle Passage journey. As women endured the hardships of slavery, there was no longer time to create intricate styles. Sunday, which offered somewhat of a relief from the harsh conditions, became the only day women could prep their hair. Since hairstyles needed to last the entire week, African-American women began to wear their hair in more simplistic styles. They chose to wear styles like single plaits that were easier to manage, and used the oils available to them, like kerosene, to condition them.

Remarkably, Black women used braids for another important use: a secret messaging system for slaves to communicate with one another. People used braids as a map to freedom. For example the number of plaits worn could indicate how many roads to walk or where to meet someone to help them escape bo***ge. Similarly in the early fifteenth century, hair functioned as a carrier of messages in most West African societies including the Wolof, Mende, Mandingo, and Yoruba. Hair was an important piece of a complex language system, in which it communicated the identity of the person wearing the braids.

In Celebration of Black History month♥️🖤💚 Black Hair Fact today is the Tignon known to us as a Scarf or Headwrap

When free Black women in the South started wearing their hair in beautiful, elaborate styles that attracted a lot of attention, many saw it as a threat to the status quo. So, in 1786 the governor of Louisiana passed the Tignon Law, which required Black women to wear a tignon (scarf or wrap) over their hair as a way of signifying that they were members of the slave class, even if they were “free.” They followed the law, but rebelled by wearing beautiful, colorful fabrics adorned with jewels, turning the head wraps into glamorous, empowering fashion statements.

Once the U.S. took ownership of Louisiana through the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, the Tignon Laws were no longer enforced, but they still set the precedent for the policing of Black hair in the U.S. Many Black women continued to wear their head wraps as a symbol of resistance to white colonialism.

Today we’re honoring American Activist Angela Davis who wore a Afro as a political statement.

By the 50s and 60s, Black hair styles became an intrinsic part of major Black liberation movements.

African Americans had grown frustrated with both the racism they were facing in society, and the futility of their own efforts to try and "fit in" just to survive.

It wasn't about a style, it was a form of protest to say, I am not going to straighten my hair anymore. So the Black afros that we associate with people like Angela Davis or the Black Panthers of the civil rights movement really became a symbol of resistance.✊🏾
