When we met James Hazel he was working for the Recreation Department, helping with the after school program. Several of us would like to take credit for recruiting him but we’re not sure exactly when he came to the realization this was for him. Whether it was the pitch that he could still play basketball with kids, or that he could flip his passion for cars into keeping people safe on the roadway, he took the test, prepared for the academy, and now he’s a guardian of our community.

Last week we got this picture of Officer Hazel who bumped into a group of kids at Lucy’s Pizza and decided it was time for a pizza party. There’s no budget for things like this, just good cops doing good things. More important than the pizza is the bond built when sharing food. This is good police work.

We’re proud of everything Officer Hazel is doing but, more importantly, we’re inspired by his good work and dedication to building community. He probably won’t love the attention this post brings, because he doesn’t do it for the clout, but if you think this is cool and you see him on the road, a high five is always appropriate!
