Finding the right words and sharing news like this doesnât come easy.
We wanted to take a moment to share an important update about where things stand right now. Over the past several weeks, Patrick started having huge improvements as you all know. He has now experienced some medical setbacks that have made daily life â and the path to recovery â much more challenging.
A recent appointment with a new specialist unfortunately caused additional irritation to his inner ear and surrounding nerves, leading to a significant flare-up in symptoms and inflammation. As a result, Patrickâs condition has worsened, and heâs had to return to complete ear rest from any noise, still on a very strict diet, and very limited activity. His original doctor is now stepping back in to take the lead for now and will be administering another round of steroid injections through the eardrum to help calm inflammation and hopefully restore some of the hearing loss that had returned. A CT scan will also be scheduled soon to check for any further issues that may have developed.
Because of these complications and the level of care required, Patrick will not be able to return to work for the foreseeable future. His focus now has to be on healing, stability, and allowing his ear and nervous system the time they need to recover. Itâs not an easy decision â anyone who knows Patrick knows how dedicated and hardworking he is â but at this stage, rest and protection are absolutely necessary.
In the meantime, I (Kayla) will continue doing my best to accommodate as many clients as possible each week to make sure everyone is taken care of. We are incredibly grateful for the understanding, patience, and kindness that our clients, friends, and family have shown us throughout this journey. Your support has given us the strength to keep going, even on the hardest days.
We truly canât thank you enough for the generosity, prayers, and encouragement that continue to surround us. Every message, donation, and kind word makes a difference.
For anyone wishing to reach out, please contact us through the shop cell.(217-530-9609). Out of respect for Patrickâs healing process, we kindly ask that messages not be sent to him directly at this time. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Kayla and Patrick

Update from Patrick & Kayla
Hi everyone,
We want to take a few moments to share some important updates with you, and also to express our deepest gratitude. This journey has been full of ups and downs, but your generosity, encouragement, and prayers have carried us through, and we are so thankful for every single one of you.
Patrick recently completed another hearing test, and we were relieved to see real signs of improvement compared to earlier this year. In fact, the audiology team at the University of Illinois has taken a special interest in his case because of the unusual and hopeful recovery patterns theyâve observed. Theyâve even expressed the desire to use his case as a study, with the hope that his experience might shed light on treatments and outcomes for others in the future. Itâs both humbling and encouraging to know that what Patrick is going through could help expand understanding and possibly benefit others who face similar struggles.
Day to day, the focus has been on learning how to live within some very strict boundaries â paired with careful ear rest. These changes have been far from easy, but theyâve proven to be essential. Each day teaches us something new: how a meal, an activity, or even a small decision can affect his symptoms. Itâs a constant balance between pushing forward and knowing when to slow down and rest. Over time, weâve seen steady progress â less dizziness, fewer flare-ups, and more stability in both tone and volume of hearing. Even small victories, like being able to tolerate a little more sodium without a setback, or waking up without the pain and fullness that used to follow, feel like milestones worth celebrating.
Of course, this journey is not without its challenges. There are still days when symptoms come back unpredictably, reminding us that healing is not a straight line. But compared to where things were just months ago, the improvements are undeniable. And most importantly, there is hope â real, tangible hope â that things can continue moving in the right direction.
We also want to take a special moment to thank our clients. Your patience, understanding, and flexibility have meant the world to us during this time. Knowing that we can focus on health without sacrificing the relationships and trust weâve built in our work has lifted a huge burden from our shoulders. Your support has given us the breathing room to heal, and for that, we are deeply grateful.
To all of our family, friends, clients, and every single person who has donated, shared, or offered a kind word â thank you. Your generosity has not only helped with medical appointments, testing, and dietary needs, but it has also given us peace of mind when we needed it most. Youâve reminded us that we are not alone in this fight, and that means more than we could ever express.
From both of us â thank you for believing in Patrickâs recovery and for giving us strength during the hardest days. Weâll continue to share updates, and we remain deeply grateful for every one of you who has chosen to walk this journey with us.
With love and gratitude,
Patrick & Kayla

Dear Vintage Edge Family,
First, we want to take a moment to thank each of you for your incredible support, patience, flexibility, and kindness over these last several weeks. Your understanding and encouragement mean the world to us, and it's what keeps our little shop going strong.
As many of you know, Patrick's road to recovery is still quite unknown. We are fully relying on the guidance of his doctors along with our own research to help us navigate things. Unfortunately, there is very little clear information about his condition. We keep getting told it could be one of many things, which makes the process slow and unpredictable.
For now, full rest is of the essence, and every day brings something new. Inner ear nerve damage affects balance, hearing, stability, vision, and recovery is very unpredictable. On top of that, even simple everyday tasks can become difficult because of vertigo and cognitive fog, which change from day to day.
Healing the nerve in the earâand the ear itself-is proving to be a difficult task, but we remain hopeful.
I've tried my best to keep everyone updated in the shop who asks. That said, for my own mental health and to ensure I give you the best service and experience possible, I may need to kindly decline giving updates during your appointment. Please know this comes from a place of care and focusâ and that both Patrick and I cannot thank you enough for the outpouring of love, concern, and support you've shown us. For more updates as we have them, I will soon post it on the GoFundMe when I have more time.
Because Patrick is still unable to return to work and I cannot afford to get sick, I kindly ask that if you are not feeling well, or if you've recently been around someone who is sick, please wait at least 1-2 weeks after symptoms have fully resolved before scheduling or keeping your appointment. Please cancel or reschedule via the app, call, or text (217-530-9609). This small act of consideration helps keep our shop safe and ensures I can continue serving you without interruption.
Thank you again for being such an important part of our barbershop family. Your loyalty, support ,understanding, & generosity mean more than words can express.
With gratitude,
Kayla & Patrick
