The Montessori principle of the "Absorbent Mind" is about a young child's incredible ability to soak up everything from their environment, during the early years (birth to age 6). During this time, kids are like sponges, effortlessly absorbing language, behavior, and knowledge, laying the foundation for lifelong learning.

So how can you harness this?

1. Create a Prepared Environment: Fill your child’s space with sensory-rich experiences and opportunities for exploration. Keep it simple and orderly. Think low shelves with engaging toys, a cozy reading corner, or a child-sized kitchen area where they can safely experiment.

2. Encourage Independence: Let your child participate in daily tasks like dressing, pouring water, or helping with chores. These activities build confidence and teach valuable life skills. Offer choices within safe boundaries to foster decision-making—like choosing between a red or blue shirt, or an apple or banana for a snack.

3. Use Positive Language and Behavior: Speak frequently and use rich language to help build their vocabulary. Read to them daily, as books are a powerful way to expand their understanding of the world. Model the behavior you want to see, as children absorb not just knowledge but also social cues and emotions.

If your child is 5 or 6 and you wish you had known this earlier, don’t worry—it’s never too late to support learning and good habits! Start by creating a more intentional environment now, encouraging independence through new responsibilities, and fostering a love of learning by supporting their interests. Learning is a lifelong process, and the impact of embracing the Absorbent Mind principles will continue to benefit your child for years to come. 🌱✨

ASL Basics - All Lessons 09/17/2024

Something I've been investing in recently, learning ASL in an attempt to bridge more gaps in the community. There's a playlist I work with and replay the videos in as refreshers as I move along. Most videos if you click the "see more ..." In their descriptions it will bring up timestamps for each word to make reviews much more efficient

ASL Basics - All Lessons This is a playlist of all of my ASL lessons I've made so far all in one place. Feel free to jump to the subjects that interest you the most.

You can’t carry the past into the future, so let’s let the past go so we can move to the next chapter. (Spoiler: it gets so much better)

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
’Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops,
Weakened by my soulful cries?

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
’Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own backyard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.
