📣 Congrats, your pregnancy test is positive. Let’s talk about acne because hormonal changes in early pregnancy can increase oil production, clog pores, and trigger breakouts—even in women who have always had clear skin. Acne in pregnancy is incredibly common, but not every treatment is safe.

Some prescription acne medications should be avoided during pregnancy due to known risks to fetal development:
• Hormonal acne therapies may interfere with normal hormone signaling and carry a risk of birth defects.
• Isotretinoin, an oral form of vitamin A, can cause severe birth defects involving the heart, brain, and facial structures.
• Oral tetracyclines can discolor developing teeth and affect bone growth if taken after the fourth month.
• Topical retinoids, also in the vitamin A family, have low absorption but are still avoided as a precaution. Many appear in prescription and OTC products, so reading labels closely is important.

Many women experience worsening acne in pregnancy, and others develop it for the first time. This is normal, and safer alternatives do exist. If you have any questions, please consult your OB provider.
