Attention: Family Caregivers…Are You Stressed Due To Your Caregiver Duties?
If you’re a caregiver taking care of a loved one, stressed about how you’re going to make it through another week, or day for that matter, then you’re not alone. According to recent studies:
• Caregivers is the fastest growing employee demographic
• There are 53 million U.S. adults who care for a spouse, elderly parent or relative, or special needs child
• 73% of all employees have some type of caregiving responsibility
• In 2023, caregivers spent an average of 26 hours per week providing care (188% increase from 2020!)
While these statistics may be informative to read, being a family caregiver while balancing work and family responsibilities is much more difficult and has a real impact on your mental health. In fact, there is one factor that more than doubles the stress level of a caregiver. What is that? Living with the person receiving care. That’s right, 66% of caregivers who actually share a home with the person they are providing care for report low overall well-being, compared to 31% of caregivers who care for someone that lives elsewhere!
Impact on mental health:
• Only 23% of caregivers report “good” mental health.
• 40% of caregivers say that their caregiving responsibilities negatively impact their stress levels
• Almost half of caregivers (47%) have experienced increased anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues — 62% more than non-caregivers!
Two Simple Things That Can Help:
• Seek out Caregiver Support Groups (in-person, online, etc.)
• Set up home care services for your loved one
At Superior Home Care Service, we assist family caregivers with reducing stress levels by providing the following for their loved ones: bathing/grooming, dressing, meal preparation, laundry, light housekeeping, and more. We also provide resources for support groups and setting up home care services if needed.
If you and/or someone you know is a family caregiver and needs help with their loved one to assist with light housekeeping, please call Superior Home Care Service at 312-883-6744 or email [email protected]

Happy New Year!
It seems unreal that the year 2024 has come and gone. Whether this past year was filled with joy or with pain, or for most of us a combination of both…we made it through. This is a true testament to our fortitude and resilience. It is these virtues that I hope we all carry into the new year. Add to this, a little hope, and the world and all dreams are within reach. So remember to be kind, love without abandon, and stretch your arms wide and reach for the stars and beyond in 2025!

Happy New Year!

As 2024 comes to a close, and the temperature outside begins to drop below 32 degrees more frequently, we begin to seek shelter in a warm cozy environment with much more fervor than ever before. If we are so blessed to do so, as many are not, let us reflect on how fortunate we are. Let us also reflect on all the things that happened this year that has helped us grow in some way. Despite the frigid weather and the snow, it is a good thing to have a winter season because it makes us stay inside more and move less. This reduction in movement prompts us to contemplate. This contemplation, if you allow it, can turn into reflection of the past 12 months. This reflection can then lead us to create plans for the next 12 months and beyond. Sometimes, you come up with brilliant insights when you take the time to just be still. Taking it all in during this time, the good, the bad and everything in between, helps us to grow stronger and wiser. So, as you enjoy family and friends or just contemplate alone during this holiday season, remember to just…enjoy the ride!

Happy Holidays!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Are You Moving So Fast That You Forget Something Really Important?

In today’s fast-paced world we are bombarded by things our ancestors couldn’t even imagine. This hyper tech, advertising intense environment has pushed many people into a frenetic way of living.

The new Netflix documentary, Buy It Now highlights how companies like Amazon strategically engineer hungry consumers and then the film really focuses on the landfill, waste and other fall out that occurs because of our “throw away” way of living.
Unlike our ancestors just a few generations ago, who would take their shoes to a repair shop and get new soles, today we just buy cheap shoes, wear them for a brief time and get rid of them for something “new”. What’s worse, we do this with almost everything: apparel, cellphones, houseware and more. This way of being has not only proved harmful to the environment, but unfortunately it also gnaws away at an attribute that our ancestors possessed, gratitude. With so many options to buy things with a key stroke, and they appear, as if almost by magic, the next day at our doorstep, it becomes rather easy to lose the sense of value of things. What’s scarier, is how this value erosion seems to be slowly creeping beyond physical things and into something even more valuable…our relationships with people. With this in mind, we at Superior Home Care Service would like to slow down and express gratitude for the simple things, our families, our friends, our staff, our referral sources and most importantly our clients and their families for allowing us to serve them.

Alzheimer’s Awareness Month
Do You Know What Is Deadlier Than Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer Combined?
Many of us have either directly or indirectly been affected by the ravages of breast cancer or prostate cancer. Both diseases are talked about often so it makes sense that we are more aware of how deadly they can be. But do you know what disease is more deadly than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined? Alzheimer’s. Yes, that’s right. Alzheimer’s is usually more associated with aging by many people, and not usually is discussed as being deadly. On the contrary, Alzheimer’s is a progressive, deadly brain disease for which there is no cure, and is NOT a normal part of healthy aging. What causes Alzheimer’s? While researchers are not completely sure of the root cause, it’s widely believed that Alzheimer’s is due to the building of misfolded proteins between nerve cells, which cause brain damage. If you or someone you know is/has been a family caregiver for elderly or disabled loved one, you know that it can be extremely challenging physically, mentally, financially and emotionally. When caring for someone with Alzheimer’s, due to the nature of the disease and its symptoms, the challenge can be exponentially more severe for everyone.
With this in mind, we’d like to acknowledge Alzheimer’s Awareness Month all the caregivers caring for someone with Alzheimer's.
Here are some Alzheimer’s facts that are worth noting:
• More than 6.9 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s with 3 million new cases diagnosed each year
• Alzheimer’s is deadlier than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined
• The disease is most prevalent in women and African Americans
• The number of Americans with Alzheimer’s is projected to grow to 13.8 million by the year 2060
• More than 11 million Americans caregivers provide over 18.4 billion hours of unpaid care
(Source: Alzheimer’s Foundation Of America and Alzheimer’s Association)
To many, the above facts may be startling, but at Superior Home Care Service we assist the family caregivers of our clients with this huge burden every day and we feel privileged and honored to do so.
If you and/or someone you know has Alzheimer’s and needs help with: meal preparation, light housekeeping, shopping/errands, medication reminders, personal care or escort/transportation, please call Superior Home Care Service at 312-883-6744 or email [email protected]

National Family Caregivers Month
Have You Become A Family Caregiver and Didn’t Realize It?
Sometimes becoming a family caregiver has an interesting progression and the reality of what happened kind of sneaks up on you. Initially it begins with small things like going to the store or picking up a prescription from the pharmacy. Over time, additional things are needed, then all of a sudden, you’re in a full blown family caregiver role. So, what is a family caregiver anyway? In essence, a family caregiver is a family member that has assumed caregiving responsibilities for a family member and is not being paid for it. For the most part, most family caregivers gradually transition into this role as they see their loved ones become less able to do the things they used to on their own. However, it can also be sudden as well. Getting paid for this is usually the last thing on your mind, as the primary focus becomes taking care of your loved one. After all, if it’s your parent, you actually feel it’s the least you can do after all your parent did for you. Unfortunately, things can and often do get out of balance…
With this in mind, we’d like to acknowledge National Family Caregivers Month and recognize and shine a spotlight on all the family caregivers.
Here are some family caregiver facts that are worth noting:
• More than 100 million US adults care for a child, parent or other relative
• 22% of individuals must split their time between full-time work and caregiving duties, effective pulling double duty
• There’s been a dramatic increase in the amount of time people spend caregiving:
o In 2020, caregivers spent an average of nine hours per week providing care but in 2023 the number of hours has increased to 26 hours per week.
(Source: Guardian’s 12th Annual Workplace Benefits Study)
To many, the above facts may be startling, but at Superior Home Care Service we assist the family caregivers of our clients with this huge burden every day and we feel privileged and honored to do so.
If you and/or someone you know is a family caregiver and needs help with their loved one for: meal preparation, light housekeeping, shopping/errands, medication reminders, personal care or escort/transportation, please call Superior Home Care Service at 312-883-6744 or email [email protected]
