NUTRITION BASICS #4: POST-EXERCISE SHAKES - To maximize Building Muscle or Maintaining Muscle after exercise, it is key to provide the Fuel your Muscles need in the form of a Protein-Rich Shake! Protein is broken down to amino acids and these are absorbed into muscle cells after exercise. Exercise including both aerobic and resistance exercise stretches your muscle cells and stimulates new cells to merge into muscle to grow the muscle fibers that you are exercising. Whether you want to grow larger muscles or simply get stronger with a lean shape, you can get your Best Personal Shape by giving your muscle the proteins they need after you exercise. As shown on the slide, the greatest stimulation of new protein synthesis occurs 30 minutes to 1 hour after exercise which is when you should have a Protein-Rich Shake with 25 to 30 grams of protein and carbohydrate which stimulates uptake of amino acids by increasing the levels of the hormone insulin and branched chain-amino acids including leucine which also stimulates new protein synthesis.
