LED LIGHT THERAPY FOR SKIN: WHAT TO KNOW

LED PHOTOTHERAPY
Is a non-invasive hand and facial treatment that uses narrow band, non-thermal LED light energy to trigger your body's natural cell processes to accelerate skin rejuvenation and repair. LED Light Therapy uses colour wavelengths of visible light which have specific skin benefits for sun damage, acne, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, sensitive and inflammatory conditions, wound healing and scarring. It's also brilliant at brightening the skin as well as anyone looking to restore skins radiance.

FAST FACTS ABOUT LED, or Light Emitting Diode Therapy
Originally used by U.S. Navy SEALs for wound treatment, LED light therapy is now used by some aestheticians to help regenerate the skin from aging. It’s also used for acne.
While LED light therapy can technically be used on any part of the body, it's most popular use is for the face. Skin damage tends to occur to your face because it’s exposed to the elements more than other body parts. LED therapy can also be used on the neck and chest, which are other areas that tend to show signs of aging.

PROFESSIONAL LED LIGHT THERAPY
May also be used in conjunction with other skin therapies, such as microdermabrasion and when used consistently and as directed, LED Light Therapy can improve your skin over time. It is performed by a licensed aesthetician or a dermatologist.
LED Lights are thought to pe*****te your skin at different depths and cause various reactions in your skin.
Although at home LED devices are available, the downside is they use lower frequencies and haven’t been proven as effective, therefore the results may not be as dramatic.

CONVENIENCE
LED Phototherapy Treatments take 10 to 20 minutes at a time. You’ll need to go back once a week for up to 10 weeks, then only once every few months.

SAFETY
Unlike other types of light therapy, LEDs do not contain ultraviolet rays. Therefore they are safe for regular use.
LED light therapy doesn’t cause burns compared to other anti-aging treatments such as chemical peels, dermabrasion, and laser therapy. It may be safe for all skin colors and types.
You shouldn’t use LED light therapy if you take Accutane for acne or if you’re experiencing skin rashes.
Side effects are rare, but may include increased inflammation, redness, and rashes.
Your Professional provider will use
Red, Blue or other colours of light frequencies based on the skincare concern. Most popular being Red as it is primarily used for anti-aging, while Blue is used for acne treatment.

1. RED L.E.D. THERAPY
Dermatologists, spas, and aestheticians use Red LED therapy to increase natural hydration levels, reduce redness, inflammation, shrink the appearance of pores, regulate oil production, improve circulation, accelerate skin repair, reduce the effects of sun damage, improve skin's elasticity, and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Red light or Infrared light therapy is used for treating the epidermis (outer layer of skin). When the light is applied to your skin, the epidermis absorbs it and then stimulates collagen proteins.
In theory, more collagen means that your skin will look smoother and fuller, which in turn can give you a healthier glow.

2. BLUE L.E.D. THERAPY
Dermatologists, spas, and aestheticians use Blue LED therapy for it's antibacterial properties. It helps in the treatment of acne without irritation, reduces oil production , prevents future break out, reduces the appearance of sun damage, and offers a UV-free alternative for the treatment of eczema and psoriasis.
Blue light therapy targets the sebaceous glands. Also called oil glands, these are located beneath your hair follicles.

Sebaceous glands are necessary for lubricating your skin and hair so that it doesn’t dry out. However, these glands can become overactive, leading to oily skin and acne.
The theory is that blue LED light therapy can target these oil glands and make them less active. In turn, you may see fewer acne breakouts. Blue light can also kill acne-causing bacteria beneath the skin, which can help treat severe acne pimples, including cysts and nodules.
Oftentimes, blue light is used in conjunction with red LED light to help treat acne, decrease scarring, and promote anti-inflammatory effects. One 2018 study found that blue LED improved healing of third-degree skin burns.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER THERAPY
LED light therapy is noninvasive, so no recovery time is required. You should be able to continue with your everyday activities once your treatment is over.
Professional LED light therapy requires up to 10 sessions (or more), each spaced out about a week apart. You may start to see minor results after your first session. Results will be more dramatic and noticeable once you’ve finished all your treatments.
Even after you’ve achieved the recommended amount of sessions, your results aren’t permanent.

As your skin cells turn over, you may lose some collagen and start to see signs of aging again. You may also start to see acne breakouts. This is why it’s recommended that you go back for maintenance treatments every few months, or as recommended by your provider.

TAKING PROPER CARE OF YOUR SKIN IN THE SUMMER MONTHS

Summer is here. That means it is time to head over to the beach and get the grill out. Summer is the perfect time to plan outdoor activities. However, it is also the worst time of year for many people’s skin.
Summer heat is an obvious factor in dehydration and the causes of dry skin can often be environmental.

Whether you spend time in swimming pools with heavy chlorination, or indoors in
Air conditioning. You should be aware that air conditioners remove moisture from your home or workplace, and without a humidifier to replace it, your skin can also dry out while you’re indoors.

Wearing daily Sunscreen while you’re outside is crucial as the summer heat may cause you to sweat, and the sun’s harmful UV rays can also rob your skin of its natural moisturizing oils.

Even if you will only be outside for a little bit, you still need sunscreen. Depending on the weather, it may only take 15 minutes for UV rays to damage your skin. In the event you will be out all day, you want to reapply sunscreen as often as every 40 - 90 minutes.

You should also consider getting a vitamin C serum that will add a dose of vitamin C to your dermis. Vitamin C is a critical nutrient to get during the summer because it increases collagen and reduces environmental damage. It can also neutralize the damaging properties of free radicals and repair your skin from UV ray damage.

Just taking these precautions and setting aside a few minutes a day can make a world of difference on the health of your skin 😊
