If you didn’t know, I am a barber too!

Being a hairstylist isn’t all rainbows & butterflies like people think it is. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love my career & couldn’t see myself doing anything else. This reel is not to steer people away from being a stylist. It is so people who are considering it know the things that a lot of stylists struggle with & don’t get blindsided.

Chronic body pain - Thankfully there are new things, techniques & tricks being created every day to help with this but that doesn’t mean it has been solved completely. Every stylist who has chronic body pain experiences different things.

Slow weeks - It happens to everyone. There’s just a week every now & then that is really slow & you don’t make as much money as you are used to.

Imposter Syndrome - This is the inability to believe that your success is deserved or thinking you don’t really know what you are doing when you actually do. This is not to be confused with genuinely not knowing something but learning/figuring it out later.

Feeling your clients emotions - If your client is telling you how excited they are about their new promotion, you’re going to be excited. But this also means when your client has a death in the family, your heart aches for them. Your clients emotions really have a huge impact on your own emotions.

Paying to work - Booth rental salons & suites are dominating the industry so this effects a good chunk of the hair community. We don’t have a job like other people where you just walk in, do your job & get paid. You have to pay for your space, your product, your booking system & more.

Comparing your work - It’s hard to not feel discouraged when you compare your work with other people. Just keep in mind you are both on your own journey.

Guilt - Guilt if you’re an hour past when you told your partner you’d be home. Guilt that your clients hair didn’t lift as much as you were hoping. Guilt when you don’t have room on your book for a client who wants in. All the guilt.

Finding your place is hard - Listen to this loud & clear. Not everyone wants to see you succeed. There are tons of people in the industry who want to uplift & encourage. Find a place that you feel at peace & valued. 01/13/2024
