Happy Earth Day! In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this day aligns with the Earth Element, which governs the spleen and stomach, emphasizing nourishment, grounding, and balance. Acupuncture and Earth Day share a goal of nurturing the body and environment through stillness, sustainability, and harmony with nature’s cycles.

Do any of these scenarios sound like your life: a stubborn knot between the shoulder blades, a low-back flare that keeps returning, or a neck that feels “stuck” after long hours at a desk? Acupuncture needles can calm the nervous system and change pain signaling and cupping can mechanically decompress tight tissue and improve local circulation.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), spring is the season of the Wood element, which governs the Liver and Gallbladder. During this time, energy (Qi) naturally moves upward and outward, much like new growth in nature.
Acupuncture is commonly used during the spring to ease the body’s transition from winter stagnation to spring activity, specifically by smoothing “Liver Qi” to prevent it from becoming stuck.

Do acupuncturists need a license to practice?
Yes. Acupuncturists are required to hold an active state license. I am licensed by the Ohio Medical Board and certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). To maintain an active license, practitioners must complete 60 continuing education credits every four years, including safety, ethics, and CPR training, along with a renewal fee and proof of active practice.

How to know if acupuncture is working? Acupuncture works through gradual improvements such as reduced pain, better sleep, increased energy, improved mood, and healthier digestion. Positive changes often occur between sessions—for example, pain may return less frequently or with less intensity—showing that the body is rebalancing. Temporary fatigue or emotional shifts can also occur and are often signs that healing is taking place.

Ready to try something new this year?
Cupping is an ancient therapy in which cups are placed on the skin to create a vacuum, lifting the skin and muscle to boost blood flow and ease tension. The vacuum is made either by briefly heating the inside of a glass cup or using a pump with plastic or silicone cups. How it works:
* Vacuum creation: The practitioner heats the cup or uses a pump to create suction.
* Suction and lifting: The skin and superficial muscle are drawn upward.
* Blood flow: Increased circulation is believed to support cell repair and reduce tension.
* Discoloration: Bruise-like marks may appear and usually fade within days to two weeks.
What to expect
* Sensation: Usually not painful; warmth is common.
* Side effects: Temporary marks are typical; dizziness or flu-like symptoms are less common.
Who should avoid it
People with conditions such as liver, kidney, or heart failure, hemophilia, anemia, or heart disease should avoid cupping.

Why 12 Meridians Acupuncture?
There are 12 major meridians within the human body, each named after the organ or function they are associated with. These meridians pair up on both sides of the body, showing the balance of yin and yang, the two key forces in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Can you believe this box holds 1,000 needles? One of the first questions people ask is, “Does acupuncture hurt?”
Most people feel only a tiny pinch when the needles go in—far less than what you’d experience with a vaccine or blood draw. Acupuncture needles are much thinner than standard medical needles, and they’re solid rather than hollow.
You might notice some sensations in the muscles, like a dull ache or a bit of tingling. Your practitioner will check in with you, especially when you start to feel a deep heaviness or slight numbness. Those feelings are usually a sign that the treatment is taking effect.
