Western medicine often focuses on treating symptoms, usually with drugs or procedures. But long before modern medicine became the norm, humans relied on the natural world to heal themselves, often taking a preventative approach. Herbalism isn’t as ancient as you might think: as recently as the 1980s, root doctors were practicing in Louisiana bayous and other parts of the South, primarily within African American communities.

Herbalism, the study and use of medicinal plants, is often dismissed as pseudoscience, marginalized compared to "real" medicine. Yet in her book Plant Magic: Herbalism in Real Life, Christine Buckley argues that herbalism and modern medicine can complement each other. Modern medicine is skilled at life-saving interventions; herbalism isn’t going to replace surgery or antibiotics, and that’s okay. Instead, it can be a way to think about and attend to an entire person as they work to uphold their health.

Science and herbalism don’t have to be opposed. It’s a fascinating and even political idea, especially now, when both modern and alternative medicine are so polarizing.
