Looking for a fun, free family event this summer? While this event is hosted in District 2, District 1 residents are warmly invited to come out for an afternoon of entertainment, community connection, and public safety education with the Detroit Police Department and Detroit Fire Department!

🚮 District 1 Residents: Let's Work Together to Keep Our Alleys Clean! 🌿

A clean alley doesn't just improve the look of our neighborhood. It helps create a safer, healthier, and stronger District 1.

Did you know that property owners are responsible for maintaining their half of the alley and the adjacent street area behind their property? By working together, we can reduce illegal dumping, discourage rodents, improve neighborhood pride, and ensure emergency vehicles have clear access when needed.

Here's how you can do your part:
- Remove weeds and overgrowth
- Store trash in secure containers
- Keep garages and alley access clear
- Report illegal dumping through the Improve Detroit app or by calling 311
- Avoid placing bulk items or debris in alleys

Neighborhood revitalization starts with each of us. A few minutes of cleanup can make a lasting difference for your block and your neighbors.

Together, let's continue building a cleaner, safer, and more beautiful District 1. One alley at a time!

Hey Everyone!

Today is "What Is a Forest?—Trees" at our Food, Family & Fun class!

Did you know that O'Hair Park is home to one of Detroit's largest and few remaining natural woodland habitats? It's called "Pitcher Woods Natural Area" named after Dr. Zina Pitcher, who served as Detroit's mayor from 1840–1841?

It features a scenic 1-mile Nature & Fitness Trail surrounded by 20 acres of beautiful mature trees and wildlife.

Today we explore some of the trees growing there, including maple, oak, spruce, and cedar. We'll compare the shapes of their leaves and needles, feel the different textures of their bark, and look up into their canopies to see how they provide shade on warm days.

From July 10 to 12, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History brings three days of programming that celebrates the legacy of the African Diaspora.

🎤 Opening Night sets the tone with live performances, spoken word and cultural showcases.

🛍️ The African Marketplace highlights handcrafted goods from Black artisans and entrepreneurs.

👧 The Children’s Village gives families a place for hands-on activities and storytelling.

🍽️ The Food Pavilion brings African, Caribbean and soul food flavors to the festival weekend.

The People Mover is FREE to ride, and Financial District Station puts you steps from Hart Plaza for the celebration.

Today for Week 3 (July 8) of our Nature of Art class on "FORM", join our special guest: Sustainability in Clay with Mama Nyame Selassie!

Inspired by the work of Detroit Strawbale Revolution, students will explore how natural materials can be used creatively and sustainably to build structures!

Using clay and found natural objects, participants will create three-dimensional sculptures based on forms found in nature—such as plants, rocks, seeds, and landscapes while learning about volume, texture, balance, and our connection to the natural world.

This special session highlights the importance of environmental stewardship, traditional earth-based practices, and the ways art can help us reconnect with nature and community.
