Muscle Monday: The Triceps Brachii

The triceps brachii, commonly known as the triceps, is the large muscle on the back of your upper arm. Made up of three heads—the long head, lateral head, and medial head—it works to extend the elbow and plays an important role in shoulder stability.

✨ Origin:
• Long head: Infraglenoid tubercle of the scapula
• Lateral & medial heads: Posterior surface of the humerus

✨ Insertion:
• Olecranon process of the ulna (the point of the elbow)

The triceps help with:

• Straightening the elbow
• Pushing movements (like pushing a door open or doing a push-up)
• Stabilizing the shoulder during overhead activities
• Controlling arm movements during lifting and reaching

When the triceps become tight or overworked, you may notice:

• Pain or tightness in the back of the upper arm
• Elbow discomfort during pushing movements
• Reduced range of motion when bending the elbow
• Shoulder tightness, especially during overhead activities
• Difficulty with lifting, pushing, or supporting body weight

Because the long head of the triceps crosses both the shoulder and elbow joints, tightness in this muscle can affect more than just your arm—it can also contribute to shoulder stiffness and reduced mobility.

Keeping the triceps healthy helps improve arm strength, shoulder function, and everyday movement.

✨ If you’re noticing tightness in the back of your arm or discomfort with pushing movements, your triceps may be asking for a little attention.

đź’Ş Muscle Monday: Biceps Brachii

When most people think of the biceps, they picture a muscle that’s all about strength—but the biceps brachii does much more than help you flex your arm!

What Does the Biceps Brachii Do?

The biceps brachii is located on the front of your upper arm and has two heads (which is why it’s called “bi-ceps”).

Its main jobs are:
đź’Ş Bending your elbow (bringing your hand toward your shoulder)
🔄 Rotating your forearm so your palm faces up (like turning a doorknob or carrying a bowl of soup)
⬆️ Assisting with lifting your arm at the shoulder

Why Does It Get Tight or Sore?

Your biceps work hard during everyday activities like:
✔️ Lifting groceries
✔️ Carrying kids or heavy bags
✔️ Pulling movements at the gym
✔️ Repetitive work with your hands and arms

Overuse, poor posture, or repetitive movements can lead to tightness, tenderness, and even contribute to shoulder or elbow discomfort.

How Massage Can Help

Massage therapy can:
✨ Reduce muscle tension
✨ Improve flexibility and range of motion
✨ Increase circulation to promote healing
✨ Help decrease pain in the shoulder, upper arm, and elbow

Have you ever noticed your biceps feeling sore after a day of lifting, yard work, or even spending hours at the computer? Let me know in the comments! đź’¬
